Small group bicycle tours in Europe

Hello travelers!

After taking two Rick Steves group bus tours, I think I would like to get some exercise on my next trip, and have a new experience.

I am an inexperienced cyclist, but capable .... early 50s .... would like to join a small group tour for 7-14 days, cycling a moderate amount of kms per day (45-75?), and bike provided, as I don't own one.

Can anyone recommend an excellent bicycle tour group, and/or some destinations that are soulful (not so much road traffic), won't kill me like the Tour de France, and the organizer is very professional and customer-service oriented. I'd love to hear about your own bicycle tour experiences!

Bike barge holland offers guided small group tours in the Netherlands. You ride bike in the day, self-selecting daily whether to be in the faster, farther group or the slower, shorter group. At night you sleep in a barge, which moves to a new plac3cevery day while you are biking. I’ve done two of their trips and enjoyed them very much.

As threadwear noted, biketours.com is one good source of guided and self-guided bicycle trips within Europe. It is a U.S. firm that arranges bicycle trips with firms in Europe. We've used them a number of times and have booked one this year as well. We prefer the self-guided versions with routes planned, maps provided, bikes rented and B&B accommodations booked. Luggage is transferred as well. Many countries are included and a wide range of price points too. Bonus: the firm's website is easy to use. Staff are great...just call to discuss potential trips. There's a modest booking fee with 5% less if you are a member of Adventure Cycling (a non-profit encouraging bicycle travel, based in Missoula, Montana).

In September we did a bike & barge trip out of Venice. 7 nights, 5 days riding, electric bikes were an option, 26 total participants many of whom were not bike riders. Days ranged from 24k to 54k and there were options on some days. We always stopped after a couple hours for a break. We toured towns I would never had thought to visit. I would highly recommend this tour. We did the "premium" barge and we go to tour the "normal" barge one day in our port. We were glad we picked the premium Ava Marie & most of the guests on the other boat were wishing they had too! Our tours guides were very experienced riders and the barge crew was terrific. It was a great trip. We booked through UTracks. They have a few they offer - they are the "middlemen" but it worked great. We overnighted in Venice so got to spend time in Venice at night and the next day.

You might also look into Beercycling if you like beer. They are a Portland, OR based company that might work as well.

Look at Caminoways.com. At a minimum, I know they do bike tours both in Spain and Ireland, and are based in Ireland. We used them to walk the Camino this past October and they took care of all the logistics for us.

Take a look at VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations. Their website is VBT.com. They offer bicycling vacations all over the world and they even have ebikes available. I was really impressed with the variety of tours in Europe and the level of support they provide. They won the 2017 Travel and Leisure award for best tour company in this category.

We used Radweg Reisen https://www.radweg-reisen.com. for a bike tour around Lake Constance. We did an independent tour, but I believe they also have guided small group tours. We had a very good experience with them. We are biking the Mosel this year with Velociped https://www.velociped.de/en.html. Again we are doing it independently, but I believe they also have guided tours. We obviously haven't taken that tour yet, but our dealings with them have been very professional so far. Most tour companies give you the option of an electric bike if you are worried about physically being able to handle the tour. I think it's a fantastic way to tour:)

Oh wow, you guys are awesome! I'd like to take a group bike tour for the companionship. You've given me such great options to research. I will keep you posted! This thread could be helping many others, so if anyone else wants to pop on with another suggestion, I (we) are all ears!
