thanks to much feedback, i've decided to carry an asus notebook for much online while in france(will be working while traveling). however, i beleive i've read somewhere here that using skype to make phonecalls from my notebook to celss and landlines is much cheaper than any type of cellphone call.
1. Can someone confirm that?
2. i havw askype account with a skype to go phone numebr that carries the same area code as my local landline. its set with voicemail. Can i use that skype to go number from france and pickup voicemail on the same low rates (roughly 2 cents/minute)? OR
3. shoudl i just stick with e-mail
As you know, skype to other skype users is free. To call friends in Germany, France and GB I pay around $10/month (for that $10 I can call about 35 countries) and talk to people on their phones from my computer who do not have skype. I'd think it would work in both directions. Wish the people who really know would chime in....
I cannot speak to the advantages or disadvantages of skype; to me, it sounds like more trouble than it is worth. When traveling, I rarely use my cellphone
and then only for travel-related calls. It is a vacation, after all. I do keep in touch with family and friends at home and the office through e-mail and Facebook. And they can reach me that way or by phone, if something important comes up. I can see the purpose of frequent phone communication if there is a family emergency, but, if I were expecting something that important, I would not go on the trip to begin with.
thats what cool about diversity. i'm 63, have 3 grandchildren, two married children, a disabled brother in the states and am teaching an online class. i need inexpensive phone access, otherwise, i could not take a vacation. I truly think its wonderful that you can take a vacation without needs such as this. I could 30 years ago. Now, it costs quite a bit literally and metaphorically to take vacation. hope this makes sense to you.
thanks steve. i appreciate the info.
