Skype mobile international

I leave tomorrow for two weeks in the UK and Italy and while on the phone with Verizon this morning I was blindsided by them informing me that my phone is in fact not set up for global use and will not work internationally. This was not the information provided to me a month ago when I visited the Verizon store, so I was clearly not prepared for finding alternatives. I'm interested in using the Skype mobile app to call cell-phones or landlines (in order to make calls to the US, UK and Italy while traveling). Has anyone had experience using this while abroad? It looks like it's about 2 cents/minute. I don't plan on making excessive phone calls, but would certainly like to have the option if necessary. Appreciate any assistance!

I use Skype on my netbook when traveling. It works fine. I even found you can call toll-free US numbers for free - they don't otherwise work abroad. Calls are free to other Skype users, so if you'll be calling the same people frequently have them install Skype too.

Download the skype app for your phone. Setup a skype account for free and then add $10 to your account. Use wifi from your hotel. Call anywhere back home and you'll have six hours of talktime. Skype to skype calls are free, skype to a cell or land line cost 2cents a minute. This is the best travel deal since Capitol one banking. You did call your bank and credit cards didnt you?

Great, thanks. Glad to hear it works for others. This seems like a good alternative to the pricey Verizon charges anyways. Yes, the banks and cards have been notified. Other than this little bump in the road, we are ready to go :)

Highly recommend Skype. I used it on my iPad to make calls over the hotel's free wifi connection in London and it worked great and the calls only cost something like .02 cents a minute.

Skype only works on phone calls, right? I've always just added the international plan for a month or less to my Verizon phone when traveling overseas to give me unlimited texts and email. Texts with our kids and email access let me keep up with necessary business details as a self-employed person with no employees to take over while I'm away. But I hope to try Skype this time for the conversations with our kids. I'm undecided about taking a netbook since I didn't use it much at all the last time...

Anyone in this chain: I am leaving Saturday for Europe. I downloaded Skype on my Dell netbook. I have never used it before. I want to be able to call my in-laws who will be staying at my house taking care of my dog. I have a few questions: 1)Can I call my MAC laptop which will be at my house with them? Will I be able to see them?
2)Is it easier to reach my in-laws by calling their cell phone?

Alyce 1a Maybe
1b Maybe 2 Probably The answers to all these questions is to set it up before you go, and practice, practice, practice. If you have a device with you in Europe with the software on it, a device for your housesitters with the software on it, both set up and practiced, and there is a camera on the device properly configured and both parties press the right buttons and there is a decent wifi signal at both ends and the housesitters answer the skype call correctly - probably. If you just call their phone with a phone from Europe it will ring where they are and they can answer it. I have no idea how tech-savvy either you or they are, no idea what your wifi will be like, how either computer will work, and how close your housesitters will be to the computer when you call.

Question: I've used Skype on my netbook in Europe to talk to my family at home on their computer. Worked great and was free. Are you saying I can I use Skype on my netbook to call a landline or cell phone at home that doesn't have a Skype app?? (have had no experience with apps...) Obviously not technically savvy here so apologizing in advance for a dumb question!

Thanks for all the good info. I set up Skype and used it and it works great. And, yes, I do want to talk to my dog. I wish he could go with me :)
