Six Words

Positive Thoughts.

Positive thoughts will keep us going - over Christmas, through lockdowns, as the stress of it all starts (or continues) to build, and as we plan for the future and (to keep this a Travel Related Question) as we start to plan for the future, and eventually have our injections and life begins to return to normal and we begin to plan travel and actually travel.

So Hopeful Positive Thoughts it is...

While I was watching the BBC national news this evening I saw the final story at the end of the broadcast and it gave such scope for positive thoughts and glimmers of hope.

A group of celebrities and Key Workers have gathered virtually and come up with Six Words.

This is a take-off of Hemingway's six word story concept.

Six words that have a powerful, often poignant message.

Perhaps we'd like to have a go and participate.

Want to play along?

I'll give a couple from the broadcast - feel free to add your own.

6 words, exactly 6, uplifting and/or poignant, something hopeful please....

Gardening Brings Great Comfort - Thanks, Monty (Alistair McGowan)

Time To Learn A New Skill (a deaf person, said in sign language)

Midwinter Miracle, Blackbird Song At Dawn (Monty Don)

Renewed Appreciation For What's Actually Important (a key worker)

... more tomorrow ...

Yes There Will Be A Tomorrow (Nigel)

I learned to always keep a large supply of toilet paper and canned goods. This training comes from my paternal grandmother. Raised her kids during the depression, but died the year I was born, so all of this is received as family lore. But here are her words, that i guess differentiate inert canned goods from oh, say, live chickens that you have to keep maintaining....
(Pointing at cupboard)
"They neither eat nor drink "

Sorry, gramma only left 5 words. We are a taciturn breed.

Extra time with my grandchildren: priceless

This year "took" some things from me (time with my 90 year old parents to protect them, trips, etc). However, it also "gave". The best thing it gave me was extra time with grandkids who are not going to school this year (and have essential workers for parents) It has been precious.

I have two:

Re travel--I miss the ravens and storks.

Re life--Enjoy what there is to enjoy.

In trying to stay positive throughout the turmoil of the pandemic and deal with dashed hopes and shaky expectations and disappointments ranging from tiny to epic, I am focusing on what there is to be enjoyed--the little things that make me happy and that I have some control over, instead of the continuous bemoaning of what is not possible at this time.

A couple to add:

I’ve got six ‘sixers’ to share... great thread!
The pandemic & technology have created new opportunities in a way, with grandchildren and other family living in different cities (and not being able to visit in person):

  • Watching grandchild’s Christmas recital via Zoom.
  • FaceTiming multiple households on Christmas morning.
  • Having to juggle Zoom family gatherings.
  • Sharing silly Elf jokes via chat.
  • We’re actually spending more time ‘together’.

And travel-related:
- Holding travel dollar credits to spend.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

“Dear Older Me, don’t look back.”

I love that Nigel. It’s my favorite.
My mom always said “And this too shall pass.”

Quiltter, my mom always said something similar to your mom, “Everything is going to be ok.” Very comforting words for me.
