I don't know about buying SIM cads in VCE. Looking at the airport's website listing of stores, I don't see an obvious place, but maybe you are sharper-eyed than me: http://tinyurl.com/c56d5a4 But when I bought a SIM in Venice itself, it took somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes for it to be activated; it didn't work immediately. So, a better plan would be to either use a pay phone at the airport, or, if your Canadian phone will work in Italy, just plan on using that and spending a few dollars for the one call, and then getting an Italian SIM later. Also, to buy an Italian SIM you need not only your passport, but also a Codice Fiscale. Get this before you go; the details are near the bottom of this page: http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/italy.php

I haven't been to the Venice airport - but I'd be really surprised if there isn't a kiosk in the airport that sells phones and SIM cards. Italy, more than any country I've been to in Europe is populated by people with cell phones glued to their ears. 30 minutes to get it up and running in your phone seems about right though.
