We want to drive or take the train from Amsterdam to Paris in early August 2010, and find interesting sights/dining along the way. What are some highlights we should not miss? Would it be a nice car drive, or can you take the train and get off and on for overnight stays along the way? I am not so interested in things to do in the cities of Amsterdam and Paris, but in the less familar places in between. thanks so much.
So do I buy separate tickets for each leg of the trip? Have you driven this? does it even make sense to do so? thanks,
The key cities between Amsterdam and Paris are Rotterdam, the Hague, Antwerp, Gent, Bruges, and Brussels. For these destinations use the IC trains and simply purchase tickets at the train station on the day of your journey....you'll need sperate tickets for each leg. From Brussels to Paris, or the if you decide to go non-stop from Amsterdam to Paris (journey time 3 hours 40 minutes), you will have to use the Thalys high-speed train. To get the cheapest fare you need to book in advance at http://www.thalys.com.
Tell the website you live in Holland or Brussels.
I would NOT drive. I have driven that route many times when we lived in europe and it is as fun as driving between say DC and manhattan. All busy highways w/speeding trucks and signs that will be unfamiliar to you. It is not a long distance, but exhausting. Suggest plane, or train. You could take thayls to Brussels, visit Bruges, even spend the night there, and then continue on to Amsterdam. Very nice, relaxing, and civilized. Happy travels.
Rick Steves recommends Brugges. It's hardly off the beaten track, but is popular for good reason.
I would do as Michael suggested. Research the places he points out. Pick as many as you would like to see, then buy tickets on the slower trains to get there.
The driving route between Amsterdam and Paris is the European equivalent to I-95 or I-5 in the US. It is just as congested and less scenic. Take the train!
Brugge is a must.
