Side Trips from Vienna

Work will take me and my family to Vienna for 6 weeks this summer. We will get a couple of weekends that we can travel. We will probably be traveling by train. In 2004, we spent 3 1/2 months in Vienna and did a lot of traveling then. We went to Prague, Budapest, Salzburg, Zurich, Munich, Berlin, Rothenburg, Rhine Valley, Reutte/Fuesen, Rome, Florence, Venice and the Cinque Terra. We are looking for some new places to visit where we wouldn't spend all weekend on the train. Would love to Visit Holland and Belgium but seems too far. I have 2 boys ages 16 and 10 but all love the art and historical sites. Any suggestions?

Just a suggestion europe has a ton of cheap flights!

For example for May you can fly sky europe from vienna to brussels for only 1 euro plus taxes, which only comes to a total of 25 euro! I bet thats cheaper than most train trips.

The key to some of these budget airlines is to book early, to get the best deal! Even by next week the prices could go up as more people book.

Also for all the budget airlines check out www.skyscanner.net

Just be careful some of the budget airlines fly into airports outside of the cities.

When i went to vienna, we went for side trips to both salzburg and innsbruck. Innsbruck is a very neat little town. As well as the whole Tyrol region. Two Olympic Winter Games were held in innsbruck. The ski jumps are pretty cool to see. And in the actual town itself, is the famous " golden roof " where emperors use to watch over events in the square below.

Not sure if this is something that would interest you, but Mauthausen concentration camp is not far from Vienna. The buildings there are original. Visiting there was one of the most memorable things I did during my whole semester in Austria.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I actually forgot to mention that we spent a few hours in Innsbruck walking around and eating lunch. Been to Melk and Mauthausen but not Krems. Anybody know about Hallstat? Looking for a weekend trip. We've been to all the big cities within a few hours of Vienna like Munich, Salzburg, Prague and Budapest. We will probably have a Eurail pass. Besides the ones I listed above, any suggestions? Any neat towns in Germany? Thanks for all the help.

Hallstat and the Salzkammergut area (lakes region) are also great places to see.

Hi Mendy,

... since you are familiar with Vienna, you know there is a branch of the tourist information office in the Opernpassage... we suggest you have a chat with them about excursions ... they know about more than just Vienna!
... All the best,
P.
