Sicily and Malta or Southern Greece Itinerary

Can't decide which would be better for a two week vacation next summer.
We like history, culture, old towns.
Greece option would include Athens,Santorini and Crete.
Anyone had this dilemma?

Having just returned from a trip that included Athens, Santorini and Crete and with only 2 weeks, I'd spend the whole time in Sicily. Lots of history, great Greek and Roman ruins, great food...and you can flush used toilet paper down the toilet instead of having to put it in a receptacle of some kind near the toilet.

I haven't been to Greece, but I loved Sicily and Malta. Though 2 weeks is barely enough for Sicily, do try to squeeze in 3-4 days in Malta.

I've been to Sicily and Greece but not Malta. I would spend the two weeks in Sicily.

I agree with Chani that Malta would be an excellent choice. I spent two weeks there a few years ago and was surprised at how much there was to see. We did a day trip to Sicily one day, too, to see Mt. Etna, and we had a short stop in Modica, a most beautiful Sicilian town. By the way, if you are at all interested in WWII history, there isn't a better place than Malta to search it out.

Hello Brian. I think being at only the city Taormina on SICILY could be satisfactory if you will be on Sicily seven days or less. If you will be on Sicily more than seven days, you could travel to more places on that island (the north side of the island). At Taormina, reserve a room in a good hotel located at the top of the cliff, with a view of the Mediterranean Sea from the hotel's patio. Airline flights to the airport located south of Taormina are from airports at various countries in Europe. I liked some islands of Greece (a good place for relaxing under the blue sky). I did not like being at Athens. I was not at Malta.

Votes are in. Thanks to all. Sicily and hopefully Malta will be our choice for a great holiday.

Sicilian highlights look fairly spread out. Will have 16 days, starting/ending in Palmero; is it realistic to drive counter clock-wise around the coast of Sicily to see the highlights? Would like to also see an Aeolian island as well as two days in Malta. Can you spend a couple days in Malta this way, leaving Sicily (two nights) just to get a taste of it?

That plan is feasible.

You can drive around, expressways and highways are easy to drive.

Bear in mind some very interesting locations are not on the coast, such as Villa Romana del Casale, Val di Noto, Modica, Ragusa...
