Should I buy a Global Cellphone here? (from Orbitz) or get one There?

Our wireless company (Verizon) is way too high and our phones aren't global anyway. Orbitz offers a little phone for $39 that may not be very good - Just wondered if anyone knows anything about it. I HAVE to have one because our Air Berlin flight requires a phone confirmation (them calling us) and we have no access over there. Any suggestions, PLEASE? This will be while we are in Krakow and I don't want to leave ANYTHING to chance.

Annabeth,

You might also consider a phone and SIM from one of the "travel phone" firms such as Roam Simple, Call In Europe, Cellular Abroad, Mobal or Telestial. They can provide a plan with consistent rate structures in most countries in western Europe.

Two points to consider with using a SIM purchased in Europe, is that it will have the cheapest rates in the country it was purchased, but higher roaming rates when used in other countries. The other point is that most of these are pre-paid, so have to be topped-up when the balance is depleted. It can be very inconvenient to run out of minutes when you're in the middle of a call.

OTOH, some of the travel SIM firms mentioned above are post paid, so the cost is simply billed to your credit card at the end of the month.

It would be a good idea to check the websites of the firms I listed above, so that you have a clear idea of their rate structures and terms.

I've decided to try a "travel SIM" this year, so will have further details on the costs after I return from my trip.

If any of your travel group has AT&T that would be perfect. For $5 they add international calls for 95 cents per min, no roaming....service can be dropped when you return.
