Shopping in Florence

Any good tips on shopping for jewelry in Florence? Do you get better prices in the markets and can you be assured of quality?

They don't sell real jewelry at the market stands. You need to go inside jewelry shops. There are tons of them all over Florence, especially in the historical city center (the Ponte Vecchio, or Old Bridge, is nothing but jewelry stores). GLOSSARY: GIOIELLI=jewels GIOIELLERIA=jewelry or jewelry store ORO=gold OREFICE=Goldsmith
OREFICERIA=Goldsmith store Look for store signs indicating any of the above and that's where you go.

The Ponte Vecchio is typically (note: not always, but quite often) way overpriced. If you want a piece of jewelry from there, go ahead. But if the location from which you buy it is not important, visit shops elsewhere. Florence isn't far from Lucca - if you want to take a visit, Lucca shops are supposed to have excellent jewelry. I can't speak on the prices or value though.
