Shopping - Athens, Rome, Paris & Istanbul

Hi! I am women in her early 30's living in Brooklyn, NY. I will be travelling to Athens, Rome, Paris & Istanbul this fall and I would like to buy something special and unique in each city. 1 clothing/accessory item and 1 item for the home. I would like to spend $25 to $75 on each item but willing to spend a little more for something really special. I was thinking of getting Greek sandals from Stavros Melissinos in Athens and Turkish towels from Jennifer's Hamam in Istanbul. Any recommendations?!

Thanks!

Safe travels everyone!!

Jennifer's Hammam is a lovely place. Also check out other small shops in the Arasta Bazaar. I also bought a painting in a small gallery close to the Küçük Ayasofya church close by, which I framed upon my return home (it's pretty unique compared to other displays I have at home).

My idea of good souvenirs: small, light, easily packable, not easily breakable -- so I buy scarves and refrigerator magnets. Anything you buy on your early stops will have to be hauled on trains/planes.

It's a great idea to buy sandals from "The Poet." I spent 3 weeks in Greece this past June/early July and found myself in his shop. For less than 40 euros you can find yourself a great pair of sandals that look great and can be worn right away (one less pair to take with you). Be warned, his shop is small and very crowded. If it's a hot day (and aren't they all) plan to go in the morning. Bring cash and patience. You'll be glad you stopped!

I have beautiful accent scarves that I bought in Paris, Florence and Turkey. The price range was €5-€29. You can get lovely ceramics in Istanbul. My friend and I both bought great pieces that were small and in your price range. We did not shop in the Grand Bazaar. There are quality shops at the low-key Arasta bazaar below the Blue Mosque. Wrap the item in your clothing and it get home just fine. The tiles make good trivets, if you don't want to just display them. I bought bowls. If you have cold winters at home, consider a pair of Italian leather gloves, I have shearlings that are great and cost from €30-60. The cheaper ones are as good as the most expensive ones I bought once for €90. Leather goods are usually a bargain in Italy. In Paris, look at the sidewalk artists water colors. Finding one that captures a scene that's special to you will be a great souvenir hanging on your wall for years to come.
