I am in need of good shoes that have a flat heel and are quite spongy in the inner sole. Does anyone have any advice??
Try SAS shoes. I don't know if they have a store in NO. They sell sandals and mocs and loafers and their claim to fame is comfort and fit. Made in Texas....
By far the most comfortable walking shoes I've ever bought were Earth Shoes' Women's Flight.
Very light weight shoe, with an extremely flexible sole and great arch support.
I bought them just before my trip to Europe in July.
I was on my feet all day with no problems.
I can wear Teva or Birkenstock sandals all day and my feet never hurt. Other shoes, my feet start hurting under the toes after a few hours.
They may not look the best but sure save on the feet.
And on the days we are hoping on and off trains, I wear the Teva tennis shoe.
I've bought 3 pairs of Ecco's and love them. I'm notoriously cheap, but will spend the extra money for good shoes for travel.
The Walking Store is a good place to start. They can asses your foot and recommend the type of shoe or insert you need. I have often heard that shoes with cork cores in the soles are the best "shock absorbers" for long days of walking. I second the vote for Ecco shoes. They are my favorites.
Also, in the past I would not have recommended this, but, we just returned from Italy and literally every type of shoe was worn, including the dreaded "white athletic shoe". Had really not seen them much on past visits. So, if you're most comfortable in that type of shoe, wear it, except maybe not in the dead of winter or in the evening.
Check out Naot. They have different footbeds with a cork base but varying amounts of softness. IMO, the most comfortable is the Koru footbed. I have 2 styles with that footbed. They are flat & very spongy. I discovered them 2 trips ago & was very comfortable spending lots of time on my feet. Not cheap, but sooo worth it. Naot can be hard to find, but the Walking Store carries some of them.
Have had big problems with arthritis in my big toe since years and basically, my foot always hurts, morning, noon and night, shoes on or off. Had looked at and tried on the MBT shoes and they felt fabulous, but I shied away from the over 200 euro price tag. 2 weeks ago, I saw some Sketchers in a dowtown Frankfurt store that looked similar to the MBT - round sole. They are called Shape-ups and cost 99 euro. I have worn them every day since and frankly, these are the most comfy shoes I have ever worn. Really springy sole, being round it helps your foot roll forward. I walk hours and hours every day and this shoe is like a miracle for me. I especially like it on when I walk on the many cobblestoned streets of Frankfurt. Going up and down stairs was a tad different, as was riding the escalators for some reason, but after a day or so, I was used to it.
Try a pair on and see if they are comfortable to you too. My feet love them.
They are advertising Shape-Ups heavily here, too, Jo. I can't wait to try a pair. They look extremely comfortable.
I agree with Eccos. They are not cheap, but that is all I will ever wear to travel.
We leave in 18 days for Italy. Today I found a pair of Merrell OrthoLite QForm Air Cushion. Mary Jane's side on. I have been looking for a pair of shoes since March. These felt good from the moment I put them on.
