What are the most comfortable shoes/sandles, clothing/fabric to wear in Italy during the first two weeks of July?

I think it depend on each individual. I have hard time wearing sandals in hot weather, unless I wera them with socks, but this would look cheesy.
You can buy some shoes that have air holes on the the sides. These are the best in my opinion. You have to fihure out the brand best for you. I got some beige Columbia shoes, not the athletic type, they kind of look dressier. I got themn from sierratradingpost.com
About clothes. I think the best are those made of microfabric and polyester with a low procentage of cotton or none. I found really unexpensive t-shirts at JC Penny's. I also heard that clothes made from bamboo fabric are very good, but never tried them. They keep you dry and look nice. Or try dry-fit type of clothes, or X dry . I used them and they are very nice, they really dry fast and feel nice on my sensitive skin.

Go to the Graffiti wall page and look at the section on shoes. There is a lot there. Also, the Packing Light section has lots of info on clothing to take. It's a real personal choice about footwear. I have some Mephisto sandals that are very comfortable without sox. July in Italy may be about as hot as it is where you live, but less humid. Sweat and stickiness should be less of a problem there. I would definitely plan to wear a hat. The sun is intense.

When traveling in Italy, I live in my Chaco sandals. I usually have a light weight pair of shoes that I normally wear on the plane, then have as my second pair of shoes.

July is going to be HOT...sandals are fine. I've worn mine with capri pants, and with a skirt.

Clothing - as I mentioned above, I take capri pants and one skirt. Skirts are cooler to wear, and you are automatically "dressed up". I've taken a shorter skirt with a bit of lycra for easy walking, and a flowy, to the knee skirt made of linen. Tops for me are always solid colored short sleeved t-shirts. A cotton sweater for cooler days, or nights, and for entry to churches and for dinner time. I tend to pack black and khaki bottoms and black, white and blue tops to coordinate. Shoes/sandals are always black.

No shorts, unless you plan to hike the Cinque Terre, or will be at a beach area. You can get by with 2 pairs of capri pants and one skirt, several tops and your sandals for your 2 week trip.
