shoes/sandals

We are going to Italy (Rome,Vieste,Florence,Cortona) in mid to late September. "Comfortable shoes are my issue. My husband purchased Memphisto closed toe sandals. We are taking an average size suitcase so we have room for several shoes. I am unsure if I should purchase the Memphisto sandals recommended or a shoe with more support for walking on Cobblestone streets. Help. Teresa

We were there in Sept/Oct of 06 & I wore Earth sandals mostly, my husband wore Tevas..they worked fine.

I love Chacos but they don't have close toed shoes. They are also slip-proof so if you are walking nad it's damp you won't slip.

I've heard great things about Keen Sandals-they have closed toe sandals.

Check them out on REI.com

I've just returned from a month in Italy and loved my Keens (Mary Jane slip on style). I had also packed wedge heel espadrilles for dress up and was really sorry the night I wore the heels to Trevi Fountain. They were cute but I hobbled all the way home. I decided my Keens were worth double the $80 I paid for them because I never had a moment of foot pain with all the walking we did. I saved the heels for dinners out with a lot less walking.

I've heard so much about the Keen Mary Janes, but when I looked for them online...........there seem to be so many styles of them.

Which particular style are you referring to?

thanks.

I suffered once from wearing sandals without enough arch support and ankle support, nearly ruined my trip. go for comfort and forget about vanity! I would only wear sandals out for dress up if you are taking a cab or whatever. If you do wear sandals, invest in the high quality ones. My friend swears by Mephisto.

My husband and I swear by our Keen Venice shoes. They're similar to the idea of Tevas, but they have a rubber toe to protect your toes. Sort of like sandal, sneaker combo. And the bottom is more like a sneaker, so much more comfy than Tevas. Go to this site to see what I'm talking about: http://www.keenfootwear.com/pdp_page.cfm?productID=22

Teresa, look into San Antonio Shoes (also known as SAS)...

I've owned many pairs and my wife has too. They are good looking, very well made, quite comfortable and we've never had to "break in" any pair, wearing them all day, every day from the first day out.

Contact SAS at.... http://www.sasshoes.com/ Have a great trip! P.

Whatever you buy, be sure you wear them as much as possible before the trip to make sure you like them. You don't want to find out the new shoes aren't working on your first day. I;ve got memories of blisters to attest to that.

That said, I'm not sure much of anything is going to be comfortable on cobblestone. Maybe atheletic shoes with really thick soles.

Thanks for everyones help. I am still on the hunt . Purchased a pair of Naot sandles at a walking store, but despite the arch support they make my calves ache.(Never had that problem.) My feet pronate so I probably SHOULD wear athletic shoes with my orthotics, but they are really clunky looking.Oh the vanity. Anyone else have that problem? (Pronation, not vanity.)
