shoes or boots?

We are going to Grindelwald, Switzerland in September and plan to hike some of the easier trails. Will we need boots or just good walking shoes? Also what about walking sticks?

For most of the popular hikes listed in Rick's guidebook, walking shoes are fine. You'll mostly be using service roads rather than rugged wilderness trail. Hiking sticks are very helpful, but must be be checked on flights as they are not allowed in carry-ons. I did notice that some of the souvenir shops in Murren had some cheap walking sticks for sale for about 20CHF. They looked sturdy but had cheap plastic handle grips.

Another good choice is trail runners. They have some grip and support but are light and easy to pack.
