I will be going to Europe during the summer (but not this summer) and am a little confused as to what kind of shoes that I need to take. I will automatically be taking a pair of flip flops, but other than that I'm a not sure what to bring. I have a pair of Tevas that are a combination of a shoe/sandal. Should I bring a pair of regular shoes that are waterproof?
I wore Teva tennis and the Teva sandals for 8 weeks..rain may times...they dry. I would not carry a waterproof pair they will just add extra weight.
Nice choice incomfortable shoes! The Tevas saved my feet...so comfortable.
I think I will definitely check out the Teva regular shoes and then also take my Teva sandals. I love my Tevas.
I would also recommend looking at Chacos! They are my favorite but go with what's comfortable for you.
During a summer trip to France and Italy, i took a pair of Ecco sandals and Softwalk mary jane-style shoes. Both were durable and extremely comfortable for lots of walking. We had a few days of rain/cool weather in Paris, so i was glad to have shoes, rather than only sandals. If the Tevas can keep your feet warm and dry in case of rain, they'd probably work fine.
You may want to keep in mind that many European cities have uneven cobblestone streets. Flip-flops could be a liability, unless they're sturdy ones. I'd suggest going with something more stable like Tevas or Eccos thaAlso, have you checked out the "Best Walking Shoe" board -- http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/graffiti92.html?t offer some support and can be better secured on your feet. http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/graffiti92.html
My husband and I swear by our Keen Venice shoes. They're similar to the idea of your Tevas, but they have a rubber toe to protect your toes. And the bottom is more like a sneaker, so much more comfy than Tevas. Go to this site to see what I'm talking about:

The good thing is u can let Zappos.com be your own personal shoe store! I ordered about 50 different pairs of sandals to try out, then sent back all the ones I didn't like - for free! They have free overnight shipping & return shipping, so try out a bunch & see what works for u!!
BTW, my 2 pairs of shoes for Europe are a pair of Birks (they're the only ones that supported my overpronating feet!) & ASICS Gel Kayanos (also are for overpronators & come in narrow).
Shoe Trader www.shoetrader.com also has free shipping and free returns. I'd go order anything that looks remotely like it might work, let them arrive (5-7 days) and then return anything that doesn't work. It sure is a lot easier than going from store, to store, to store at the mall - and you get a bigger selection. Zappos is also very good.
How true, I've been playing shoes with Zappos for many months now. I lost count of how many pairs I received and sent back by now, but it is more than 50. What I learned from it so far - there is no such thing as comfortable for all day walking and stylish at the same time. Does not exist. I read all the shoe comments here on the board, and tried every brand mentioned. No luck. What other people call comfortable and stylish look like farmer's shoes to me - sorry all of you out there, don't want to hurt your feeling, it is just my opinion. Tevas, Keens, oh my god, what god awful looking shoes!!! So far I only decided to keep one pair, Naot Rachel, far removed from stylish, but at least half-way cute. Pluses - very light-weight, excellent arch support for my high arches. Minuses - well, everything else. The best walking shoe I have is Merrell Syren, I feel that it almost propells me as I walk, super comfort, but the looks, aaaaaaaaah! But, of course,I may end up wearing it in Paris, ouch!
Natasha - you are my soul mate!
I leave in about a week and have finally come to the conclusion that I will not be able to be both stylish and comfortable. Ugh, such defeat!
I can wear shoes by Earth style Tranquil all day. They are very comfortable and stylish. I ordered them from Zappos Monday morning and received Tuesday afternoon at 2:30pm. No shipping and taxes. I have trouble with my right knee and these shoes allow me to walk without pain.
I know that no one asked for my opinion......but buying and returning 50 pairs of shoes from Zappos seems a bit unfair.
SOMEONE is absorbing all of the costs of that extra two way shipping.........and it is everyone who shops there.
Robert, this is a fair question. I can tell you WHO absorbs the costs - I DO. The two pairs that I have kept from Zappos are over $100 each. I could buy them easily on eBay for $40 each. I do buy shoes on eBay, but only those brands that I am familiar with and know for sure they will fit well. But Zappos are great for trying on unfamiliar brands - no fit, send them back. But when I do purchase from them, at their outrageous prices - I compensate for all the shipping costs way over. After all, they would not be in business if they still did not make a handsome profit, no?
Ah the great shoe debate. I too have just been trying on shoes at Zappos and returning ones that won't work. However I did find a pair of stylish shoes at Dillards made by Sofft which have a padded foot-bed and a small kitten heel. They are like mules and in testing seem comfortable for when I want to dress up. I'm going to Paris and wearing them on the plane, and courtesy of Zappos taking a pair of sandals by Enzo Angiolini which have a padded foot bed and also a pair of adorable Sketchers which are very cushioned and are part leather, part cloth. I hope I have the bases covered and will finally have a blister free trip.
on my last trip, which ended yesterday, i wore birkenstock floridas (3 straps, come in colors and prints) and a pair of pseudo-croc flip flops. i took others, but i could have managed without them. we did a 2 to 5 mile walk every day.
don't think you'll look weird. they sell crocs in europe, even in some airports. and birkenstocks are everywhere.
