Shipping things home from Europe

Hi,
How easy is to ship things home from Europe? Germany in particular. I am assuming that I can go to the local post office and ship whatever I want to send home. Do they have packing material to purchase as well?
I really am not interested in using a service like Fed Ex ect.. just local mail services.

Thanks,
Wendy

This doesn't exactly fit your situation, but I have mailed packages using the French postal sytem. Packing materials were sold at the office. If I remember correctly, it took a little more than a week for my package to arrive.

The German Postal service has all kinds of packing materials to help you post your items back home. They charge about half of what UPS or Fed Ex charges. If you don't mind waiting a bit, you can ship your stuff home the slow way instead of air mail, and save even more money. It will take about 6 weeks, but can be a bargain when shipping heavy items.

In Germany we did some serious holiday shopping.

We used HDl at half the price as noted in posts.
Some boxes arrived before we returned back to US, and others came 3 weeks from date of shipment.

They have the greatest mailing services and supplies.

I took photos of my purchases in case of breakage.
One stein's handle did break. With pc receipt, photo of the stein, it made the return/refund process simple and quick.

When we were in England several years ago, we found a box to mail stuff home in. We took it to the post office and it cost a small fortune to mail home what was mostly brochures and odds & ends. The man at the post office said it would have been less expensive to send it in two smaller boxes. Lesson learned: don't pack it in too large of a box. Using boxes & packing materials available at the post office is the best idea.
