I will need to ship a small (less than 1 pound) package from Zurich to Paris. Fedex will cost about $85 (sic!), SwissPost appears about 9 francs.
Any tips/pitfalls?

The Fedex package will be shipped via airplane, and will arrive in a couple days. The SwissPost price might just be for ground shipping. It could wind up in a ship and take a couple of months to arrive in the US. So you need to find out what kind of rate the 9 franc service is.

Why would the parcel wind up "in a ship" when being mailed from Zurich to Paris? It will probably go by train in the mail car and be in Paris within a couple of days.
