Sharing Pictures with Aquaintances while Abroad?

I'm currently putting together a small photo album to carry with me when I'm travelling. I've read that this is a good way to break the ice with new aquaintances and give them a glimpse into my world back home...

What pictures should I include? Is there anything that I should NOT include? (I'm especially wondering if there is anything I should omit due to safety and security concerns.)

Thanks, everyone for any and all comments and suggestions.:-)

Good Travels,

Add a map. No one knew where Cleveland Ohio was, and I thougth maybe poeple outside the USA would know where the great lakes are. Silly me.

I would include a few pictures of my self , maybe a few relatives and friends all together and more pictures of my city, buildings, streets or other places in the US.
I would not get into many personal details, like family pictures, with a new aquaintance.

I am currently putting together a small photo album too to carry on our month long trip to Europe that will begin on June 27. I am including pictures of our cat, dog, front of our house, and our kids participating in their sports . I'm also including a couple of postcards from our city "Long Beach, CA" with images of the Queen Mary, beaches, and other famous Los Angeles area sites. Nothing too fancy, just a little slice of home to share.
I think I will include my picture of me with RICK STEVES too :)

Well, I have my standard little album that always includes a picture showing

  • the downtown (sometimes a postcard works better),

  • a landscape (which here is the Rockies),

  • a winter photo with as much snow as possible (heck, that's what's expected from a Canadian!),

  • our house,

  • our dog.

The family pictures I update every year to show the kids in current activities like practicing the piano in a soccer outfit. Or our involvment in special activities, graduations, renovations, summer vacation in Canada.

I think Carol's suggestions are spot-on (hmm, wonder if the pic with RS qualifies for the guidebook discounts...). Friends, family, pets, your neighborhood, prized heirloom tomatoes. Anything that would be a good conversation starter. Pictures from your other travels might be interesting, but pictures of the same location (i.e., showing a picture of Rome to a new acquaintance in Rome) is probably not going to interest them too much.

From a safety standpoint I would NOT include pictures that had your address or phone number on them. i.e., a picture of the mailbox with the address on the side.

My husband and I are headed to Europe on Tuesday, and we printed out pictures of our immediate families - we don't have kids yet, so just us with our parents/siblings at my graduation last month and our wedding two years ago (the most recent collective picture of my husband's family) - and also our cat :) We also printed a picture or two of our house and some pictures of our town - since we live near/work for the University of Florida, we're taking a couple of pictures of football games (us, the marching band in the shape of Florida, etc.) and the campus. There are probably about 10 pictures in all. Hopefully that won't be too many. We'll let you know how it goes!

There's something about family pets that people like. I show pictures of my family, things around my area, but as soon as I show Lulu our Cairn, they all goo-goo and gush how cute she is.

Michelle...

I'll match your Cairn with my Westie...

Other than that, I had never really thought much about taking pictures from home to Europe....at any rate, I can't think of anything that you would show to your friends here that you couldn't show to people you meet there (unless all of your friends work for the CIA).

I put photos on my iPod Nano - small screen but the video quality is very good. I put a couple photos of my family, a picture of my house, and selection of scenic photos from my area (mountains, beach, desert, snow, vineyards). It was fun to show them to my tourmates (I was on a RS tour) and also the people I met along the way.
