Server issues?

This is probably the wrong place for this but I've no idea where else to post the question.

Anyone else having issues navigating the site? The only way I've been able to get in at all is through yesterday's browser history, Once in, I'm getting the same "Server error" page when attempting to pull up anything from the left-hand menu. It happens occasionally but it's been an unusually long time; since sometime yesterday.

Kathy,

I had same issue last night. It lasted about 15 minutes. Did you email the webmaster?

Hiya, Another Kathy! No, I hadn't done that yet just in case no one else is experiencing the same.

Thanks, Allan. Good to know it's not some sort of bug on my end.

Weird. I couldn't get in using our laptop, but I could on my Android tablet. The only way I was able to get in using the (Linux based) laptop was to reload the browser (Firefox) every time I wanted to get on the RS site.

No problem this morning, though.

Edit to add: Whoops, spoke too soon. As soon as I had posted this, I tried getting back to the main Forum page via the menu, and got "Server Error." I had to go through the "previous page" arrow to get here again.

Getting weirder.

every time I posted a reply since yesterday afternoon has led to a 'It's Rick's Fault' server error that last some length of time. Even early this morning. It does load my reply, so at least I don't have to rewrite it, but it's annoying to not be able to catch up on the posts when I have time to.

Since yesterday, it f he as been hit and miss, mostly miss. Occasional issues just show how amazing the whole system is when it works, which has been most of the time. If this reply actually posts, either things were resolved, or have temporarily been fixed. Shouldn’t be too much longer, and practicing patience has been needed for other things in the past year.

. . . Well, wouldn’t you know . . . the reply above made it, but when I went to view more Recent Topics, I got Rick and the Severe Dip sign. By logging out, then back in for something like the 8th time in the last 2 days, the system’s working again, at least for now.

Sometimes I can get on with just my link to the Travel Forum, but usually not. If you have gotten on that way, and can read this now, but can't reliably get on, try this. Type in "community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum" on the URL bar. This should get you past the opening page, which is giving the error messages. Once in, you can probably navigate as usual - just avoid upper level pages, if possible (don't click on Travel Forum in the banner).

It is just Rick. He reads the forum but usually doesn't post. He keeps seeing new posts like: "Is XYZ open, I want to book for May 15th tomorrow...". Rick is just showing...open...closed...open...closed...you never know what you will get. All will be good in tie...it just needs some time.

I'm having problems again. Fortunately I can get to the forum. I PM'd Andrew to pass the message along (as if they don't know haha).
At first I thought it was my lousy computer service but even my cell service wasn't getting me in. It's a relief to know it's not just me.

Thanks, Lee. I just saved the link to the desktop.

Whew! Finally got in.
A very nice friend just emailed me and told me what might work.
Thank you.

Yikes.

So, we made a big back-end update yesterday to the www part of our site. We were aware of some issues with a few accounts if you were logged in before that time (as many of you would have been as regular forum users), but this sounds like a more widespread issue. I've made our IT team aware of this.

And thank you all for bearing with us. Obviously, we don't want you to notice when we make these sort of changes, but sometimes our pre-deployment tests miss something.

Hi Webmaster!
Yep, I tried logging out/in this morning but no go. That's OK. I'm just such a freakin' luddite that when something goes haywire with my laptop, I figure it's ME.

It's still buggy but will sit tight and assume all will be well again soon. :O)

The great news is that if you're logged in and only care about Community, everything will work wonderfully for you! But if you want to stray somewhere else and visit other parts of our website that aren't Community, you might get an error. Logging out (or visiting in a private/incognito) window will work. We've identified a fix and hope to roll it out soon.

Have had problems getting on/in for the past 12+ hours. Happy to see it wasn't just a random glitch.

Wondered if Nigel's "Alphabet' topic had finally overwhelmed the system

It's still showing the severe dip to me when logged in and using Safari, unless I go into my history from last week;
meanwhile if I try anonymously through Firefox the site comes up fine.

Still having problems. Restarted Chrome and got in but as soon as I navigated from my messages back to the forum I got the server error.

'Severe Dip' - for all but the Forum....even on my PC.

Interesting. I pulled this page up from my browser history - only way I was able to get into the forum section yesterday - and still couldn't navigate anywhere within it without the error. I'm on a Macbook, BTW, Safari browser.

On a whim, did a google search for "Rick Steves travel forum", clicked on the appropriate link (https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-forum) and, presto, works like a charm! Didn't have to log out and back in again.

This should be fixed: comment here if you spot any residual issues.

The Forum road occasionally gets some Severe Dips, but it’s great that got smoothed out. Kudos to the maintenance crew, paving the way to future travel!

Just checked the other links. Those work. I logged out and logged back in, and it was very sluggish, but didn't time out.

There is something intrinsically wrong with having to be logged off a website to use it, don't you think!

I am still getting Application Error on posts and for messages.
Cannot post on my thread about the RLD and cannot send anyone messages about it.
Have I been blocked? I can post on other threads and send messages about other topics.

The system prompted me to log back in one more time a couple days ago, but haven’t gotten the Application Error Severe Dip screen since last week. Maybe hit-and-miss?
