Choose Europe, then France. You can get a general idea of the weather in different parts of the country from the chart. For the most complete information, click on the individual cities. For example, from the city averages you will find that the average number of rainy days in September in Avignon is 6.7 and the average high temp is 78. Paris averages 14 rainy days in September and a high of 69. When it's closer to the time of your trip, you can also click on the weather forecast for a week of more current info.

Use the Weather Underground. Their website is http://www.wunderground.com/ Ignore the growing amount of advertising on the pages and put in the name or postcode of the town(s) you are interested in and you will pull up an absolutely vast horde of information. They are very reliable and the should be able to show you what has happened on specific days for a hundred years. Remember though that past performance is no indicator of future benefits. You may lose some or all of your investment. Stocks can go down as well as up.

I think September is just about perfect for visiting France. In my opinion, it's generally not too hot, nor too cold, there is still plenty of light and it's a little less crowded than during the summer. Check out the websites listed by others for specifics. It's smart to travel from north to south, as it will cool off a bit towards the end of the month, though should still be lovely. You may want to take an umbrella, I remember a torrential rainstorm one September in Aix en Provence. A sweater and a scarf and you're set. Have fun!
