I'm not sure if you can "not stand out" in Rome, but nice trousers for him with button down shirts and skirts/blouses for you is what I saw on the 60's in Italy. I'm sure that you are such spry looking people that you can get along with a younger crowd though.

Joy, the most important thing to do is dress comfortably. Rome in September can be hot and muggy, and you want to wear cool clothes. We were there in late September -- and will be again this fall -- and it was warm. I think this concern about dressing properly for Europe is way overdone, as one sees Europeans in all manner of clothing. You see very few women in skirts, but rather capris seem to be the standard. My wife and I are only a few years younger than you, and she tends to wear a light top and capris, and I wear a polo shirt and khakis, and we do just fine. Outside of Rome, and to the south, I will wear shorts to keep cool.

Recently I've seen a couple of specials on the Food Network which have been set in Greece and Italy. I checked out the folks in the backgrounds.

Women are wearing tank tops and either loose fitting long slacks, skirts or capris. Men are in polo type shirts and shorts.

How's this for crazy. I got a lecture the other day from a sales person about this.

Bermudas - just above or at the knee.
Pedal pushers - just below the knee.
Capris - a little lower down, like mid-calf.
Cropped pants - a little lower down than capris, like above the ankle.

Geeze Louise!

Your pedal pushers are just fine - no need to go buy different capris. As long as they are below the knee at any length, I think that you'll look appropriate.

Have a fantastic trip.
