Selfies..... an interesting statistic

This article was featured on several news channels this week, and it highlights an aspect of selfies that isn't often mentioned - https://www.newsweek.com/selfies-deadlier-shark-attacks-1446363 .

This situation probably won't affect as many European tourists as they won't be venturing onto the edge of canyons or other hazardous locations while they take pictures.

There are just as many high or otherwise dangerous places in Europe.

In the UK, there's at least one story every summer about a tourist falling over a cliff somewhere on the south coast while taking a selfie.

Thanks, Ken. I wonder if there are stats for people killed while other people are taking selfies? I have almost been shoved off a bridge in Venice by a Japanese woman who could not wait to position to photograph herself. I was merely taking up space enjoying the view, silly me.

There have been tourists here in SF who were killed because they slipped off when taking a selfie. I've never done a selfie in my life, wouldn't know how anyway.

Oh hey look... yet another thread where everyone gets to bitch and whine about others taking selfies.

As a solo traveler I'll continue to enjoy taking selfies... maybe enjoy them even more knowing how salty it makes some.

I’m very active on social media, but I don’t take selfies in front of most attractions. I must be the only person in Chicago who doesn’t have a selfie in front of The Bean!

But, I do take plenty when I’m out at pubs or doing random things. But everyone is different, just be courteous. I work next to the Sears Tower and certainly experience the clueless tourist when I’m trying to get to work.

I have to say I love seeing vacation photos of my friends and family happily on vacation. When they post so many pretty pictures without them in it, I usually scroll by. The photos are simply less interesting. My friends and family seem to love to see my wife and me in pictures with the sites and scenery.

If you have a bit of self hatred, I can understand that you don't want to be in photos. But that's your issue--if people are politely enjoying their vacation, their way, that's great. And I guess by that same token, I have to celebrate you rolling your eyes and looking down at people you believe don't travel as well or authentically as you do.

Happy travels!

The only time I take a selfie is when I have been doing clean-up work at the American Kinderfeld in Frankfurt and need a photo of the crew who showed up that day to help, to post on the Kinderfeld FB page. Sometimes I am the only crew who showed up, so a selfie is taken. Trying to guilt the American military and the US Consulate to be more involved with this project.

I’ve been close to wanting to help people over the edge while they were taking their selfies from a zillion angles! Especially where there is limited access to a view and people waiting - take a shot (or three) and move on.

If selfies really bother you or you feel they are beneath you...it doesn't mean you are superior, you're just old.

Let’s add, don’t stop to take a selfie during the running of the bulls in Pamplona until all the bulls have run by; as happened today.
