Selfie stick back?

Has anyone noticed a rise in the year of selfie sticks again? I've seen a ton of them in Lucerne this week.

Just for fun I'm posting this recent article about selfie sticks. https://www.timeout.com/travel/how-selfie-sticks-changed-tourism, invented by a Canadian, maybe that's the reason you-know-who wants to invade; to stop the scourge of the ‘multi-axis omni-directional shooting extender’.

Luckily, I haven’t seen one of those obnoxious things in years

It is my firm belief that anyone who uses a selfie stick, without consideration of others, should not be allowed to procreate.

I had encounters with a few at Keukenhof this year, often by tourists from countries who used to be limited in travel.

I personally took a couple of hundred photos, all hand held and unobtrusively... I have a selfie stick but don't take it on trips.

In 30 years of travel resulting in several years of time in Europe, i have never had a negative encounter with anyone using a selfie stick. I live in a European tourist city now. After the Spanish speaking tourists, if you consider all Asians as one group, they are the second most prevalent group here (but still not more than maybe 10 or 15% of the total). Actually the Asians tend to be the most polite in crowded situations. Second most respectful appears to be the over 40 Americans.

I thought maybe they were now ‘uncool’ because in 6 weeks travel in England and Italy this year I never saw any being used. I don’t care one way or another as long as the users don’t impede foot traffic.

I have a barely working right hand and using my phone to take pictures is a real problem. The old selfie stick makes the whole process much easier. Sorry if I caused a problem with it, don't think so, but there are good reasons to use one.

Lifetime travel - I don't think it's necessary for you to have to apologize or explain your reasons for choosing to use a selfie stick. That some complain about it amounts to just yelling at clouds.

I have one and use it on occasion. It is also a tripod, so I used it for that last night. When I use it for photos, it is only when we are away from other people. If there is anyone within say 6-8 feet away, we just hope for the best or ask someone else to take our photo.

One thing I appreciate about selfie sticks or hand held selfies over someone else taking the photo is that the selfie takers use up less space. Last week on the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne we were constantly stopping because of photos being taken; the subjects on one edge of the bridge and the photographer standing across from them holding up traffic of people trying to walk in between.

Spoiler alert: that opinion will be in my upcoming Trip Report.

Allan--It depends. I would never ask someone to take our photo if it would impede on anyone else. In large areas though, that is usually not an issue. Oftentimes, you can also change where you are standing a bit to avoid this.

You're a kind, patient person. Sadly for the picture takers, I'm neither. I won't intentionally step between a photographer and his/her subject, unless they're in a thoroughfare. In such cases they should find an alternative location in which they don't impede traffic IMO.

I live where there are lots of tourists taking pictures of the Opera or the W or .... They always want to stand by the metro entrance to do that. Its very hard to get good pictures of your loved ones without shooting across the sidewalk. I stop. Whats 10 seconds out of my life a few times a week and maybe they get to keep a memory. Fair deal.

Still havent see a selfie stick in it seems like forever. But this looks to be a good one. https://www.amazon.com/ATUMTEK-Bluetooth-Extendable-Aluminum-Smartphone/dp/B07TV5BCVW/ref=sr_1_3?crid=372ZIA5MDFGGY&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.R4bm3-qKh7xYAUcz1JMp1eP50q0AmCR17kOo-gBGCrKD4ZjECQrlKQec6B-abyAF2PrFkB2c69bDVFzmFoY89OQZPIfRv1m1ex0gSlPmZT_SowGwLhgsFo8nn6IBFTfDUMIEAmtFRQB4a5I97ByHdl2vdMCYjfFbb7ndjyJIUtY77wWy-M9CASLoYGB5fWWeVndWVCbneqvl-YncpThNC9I7LMN3IcH3QK0JHHMEDvo.EAQw0EFT7xlJiUfNINYp_Ir5PPB8MF4nJ_Wksrfef0o&dib_tag=se&keywords=compact%2Bselfie%2Bstick%2Btripod&qid=1749645412&sprefix=compact%2Bselfie%2Bstick%2Btripod%2Caps%2C184&sr=8-3&th=1

Thank you, my Mom would be proud that someone thinks that. I do have my limits though. I will stop, but if it goes on more than a few seconds then I may go through.

Photos are precious and I want to be courteous because having someone in my photo is important to me. By someone, I mean my wife, because her smile lights up a room and makes the photo better. So I'm hopeful that if I'm patient, others will pay it forward and be patient for a few seconds with me. I try to be observant of my surroundings and if I'm waiting for just the right moment, I'll smile and wave people through and I notice others will often do the same.

*I may copy and paste a version of this into its own thread.

Based on my Youtube watch history they are making a comeback with vloggers because, video.

There's also a new type that somehow magically digitally erases the stick itself from the shot, which again makes the vloggers very happy. Confused the hell out of me until I realized what was going on.

I hope so. One of life's greatest pleasures for me is watching tourists of a certain type tie them selves into knots when they see a selfie stick .... That is very entertaining.
