Seeking Advice -will update with results! Amsterdam July 30, departing Munich mid August

Three female adults travelling from US, first time visiting Europe. We have booked flights landing in Amsterdam and returning home from Munich about 12 days later. We have the idea to stay in Amsterdam for three nights, and intend to spend 4 days in Berlin. But we are struggling with prioritizing the balance of our time in Europe. We thought of taking the train from Amsterdam to Cologne and taking a cheap flight to Berlin, where we would stay four days. From there, we thought to take the fast train to Munich for two days prior to flying home.

What do you all recommend? Is Cologne worth the time and effort? Is there a better suggestion for that area? Is there a better plan? Any tips, warnings, ideas you care to share?

We value and enjoy history, art, rock/pop music, walking and, of course, eating and drinking. I promise to update with our final plan and appreciate your kind attention.

What/where were you planning to see/do when you bought the air tickets?

At this point pickings may be slim for hotels. Where you can get a hotel in your budget (whatever that is) may influence where you go.

I'd skip Cologne and go straight from Amsterdam to Berlin. The Cologne cathedral, from which it got its fame, is much overrated: it's mostly a 19th-century affair. With your interests, you can better spend your precious little time in Amsterdam and Berlin.
Take the train from Amsterdam to Berlin. Much more pleasant than flying, and taking everything into account it takes only some 2 hours longer. Tickets for the direct Intercity train can be as cheap as EUR 49,90 when bought in advance (at the Bahn itself or their agent Trainline).

Cologne is just OK. If any of this looks interesting to you, you could spend 2-3 nights here instead of in Cologne:

The nicer old-world towns along the west bank of the Rhine include Boppard, St. Goar, Oberwesel, Bacharach and Bingen - all are huddled closely together and are easy to visit by train (or boat) and all have their individual charms. Marksburg Castle (on the opposite river bank in Braubach,) is a fully intact medieval castle with English tours at 1 and 4 pm. Wine is the beverage of choice here:

You could fly to Berlin out of Frankfurt, or just take the train from this area.

@joe- Thanks for your reply. We were looking at the art museum, the cathedral and SS museum among other things in Cologne.
There does seem to still be plenty of available hotels. And generally we were interested in getting a chance to see this part of the country. But will carefully view the advice and suggestions of those who reply here.
