Hey all- I'll be in amsterdam may20-23 and after seeing matt lauer the other day in the giant field of tulips i MUST find that! I am not finding much info on taking tours of the bulb fields or where they are outside of AMS. Anyone have info on this?
The biggest is the Keukenhof gardens, but they'll already be closed by the time you get there. Tulip season is all but over by now. More info at http://www.keukenhof.nl/nm/english.html. Unfortunately, fields like those Matt was strolling thru will be finished by now as well. They're grown for the export trade...and the flowers are cut only a week after blooming so the bulbs retain their nutrients for export. The flowers are usually fed to the cows...although some are exported. West Friesland (north of Amsterdam) and the flat areas north of Leiden are the best places to see the open fields of flowers....but usually in April.
Are you going to the Anne Frank Huis? You can get the tix online - only if you want to commit to a date/time. You can get tix to the AFH from the tourist info stations in AMS and they'll let you know the times. Weekends are busy for it and booked solid.
I went to Keukenhof and it was absolutely stunning! I didn't even see all of it, but it was incredible! I'm afraid though you'll just miss it - it closes on 18 May.
While the tulips will be gone. Late May will have lots of great flower displays in gardens all over Europe.
