securiety deposits

The flat we went to rent in Paris requires quite a large security deposit. The full amount of the rent, in this case 1500 euros for two weeks. This will undoubtedly be returned at the end of our stay but then we have 1500 euros in our pocket to take back to the U.S. with us. Can anyone suggest the most frugal way to do this. I'll ask if they'll take an American Check from our bank but I can't believe they'll take that.

My question is when do you have to pay the rent, on arrival or when you leave? If the latter, then maybe they'll collect the rent and return the deposit at the same time and just call it even.

I've stayed in several places in Europe that accepted an American check for the deposit. Then, when you check out, they just give you back your original check and you tear it up.

They never actually cash the check unless, I suppose, you're a no show. Which, for 1500 euros, you won't be.

Ask them if they will take Travelers Cheques, in US$, for the equivalent of €1500. Then when you come back, you can cash them here with no currency exchange fee.
