Scotland or Sweden? focus on budget

My daughter (26) and I are considering a trip in May 2017 or thereabouts to either Scotland or Sweden. We have both been to Stockholm and Skane to visit relatives and would love to go back. But it turns out that we are very intrigued by the idea of Scotland. We are adventurous travellers and looking for history, beautiful rural and wild scenery, backroad byways, good food, and friendly people. But we are on a tight budget! We plan on 10-14 days.

Both are wonderful destinations and so budget considerations will be important in the decision. Where is it cheaper to travel, including car rentals or other transport, cozy but modest lodgings, meals and historic places. Thanks for any tips!

If you minimise your time in Edinburgh, then Scotland remains a far cheaper option.

Two nights in each ...
Glasgow/Trossachs
Fort William/Glencoe
Skye
Inverness
Highlands/Pitlochry
St Andrews/Stirling
Edinburgh

Was in Edinburgh and Stirling last summer. Both cities exceeded our expectations. The views, history, sights, and the people were so friendly. We even tried the haggis, not as bad as we had heard! We would like to return one day soon. you will find your wild and rural vistas in Scotland for sure. We were off a cruise ship so I can't recommend any hotels.
