Schiphol - Non Schengen to Non Schengen

I am looking at flight options from the US (Minneapolis) to Ireland (either Dublin or Belfast - am flexible) and see a possible connection at Amsterdam Schiphol for onward travel to Belfast. I've read websites and message boards, just thought I'd ask the Rick Steves community -- am I correct in thinking that, since I'd be traveling Non Schengen to Non Schengen, I would not need to clear immigration/security while connecting at Schiphol? I have only ever traveled Non Schengen to Schengen at Schiphol.

You're correct - I just flew from Minneapolis to Scotland 2 days ago (both non-Schengen) and had a layover at Schiphol and there was no immigration/security/passport check. I just walked from the arrival gate to my departure gate. It was a nice change of pace.

You are correct, and as the previous poster mentioned. You will walk off the plane on a jetway, and into the terminal, no long winding hallway to find the "connecting flights" path, just into the international terminal like walking off a domestic flight in the US, and walk to your next gate, which should be in the same terminal. Probably be able to stop for a coffee or snack on the way.

Thanks, Paul. This makes me rethink a possible 1-hour layover at Schiphol from Cork to MSP on the way home. Previously, I thought, no way -- we spent at least 30 mins in line at passport check last year, traveling MSP to Vienna via Schiphol. But, if staying in the international terminal for US--Ireland travel, makes a 1-hour layover seem doable?

I would be careful about reducing the time between flights too much. This is a big airport and due to the layout, even without customs it can take quite a while to get from gate to gate, and especially if you get distracted by the shops or getting something to eat or drink.
My preference is to allow some time to mosey through rather than race.

Hi there, I'm flying on KLM from Chicago to Amsterdam to Prague in a few months and am confused about passport control and security for when I connect in Schiphol.

Non Schengen (ORD) > Schengen (AMS) > Schengen (PRG)

Will I need to go through security in Amsterdam or just passport control--or both? I've never connected in Amsterdam, I've only landed and departed from there. If I don't have to go through security, I'm not going to scrutinize all my liquids. :)

Any guidance is appreciated!

Jill, you will need to go through passport control since you are coming from a non-Schengen country, but you should not need to go through security.

That's the thing, I've seen different information out there about the security part of the process. I hope you are right! Found an email address and emailed Schiphol airport a bit ago to confirm.

Whether or not you need to go thru security again depends on where youโ€™re arriving from. The US is considered to be a country with good security procedures themselves, so if youโ€™re arriving from the US and transfer at Schiphol you donโ€™t need to reclear security.

Schiphol airport officials just responded to my email via [email protected]:

Hi Jill,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. I'm happy to assist you.

When traveling from the US and connecting in Amsterdam to your final destination of Prague, you will indeed need to go through both passport control and security at Schiphol Airport.

Upon arrival at Schiphol, you will go through passport control to enter the Schengen Area. This is the standard procedure for international travelers entering the European Union.

After passing through passport control, you will proceed to the security check area. Here, you will undergo the regular security screening process to ensure the safety of all passengers.

Once you have completed both passport control and security, you will be able to proceed to your departure gate for your connecting flight to Prague.

If you have any further questions or need additional information, please feel free to ask. We are here to help.

It's entirely possible that they are just telling me this because they want everyone to assume they have to go through security even if they don't, as a security measure in itself. I will assume that I do and pack accordingly.

Security for the second flight may be conducted on behalf of the airline and concentrate on carry-on bags as well as personal identities. This does not contradict the official message, which I thought was good for the airport to offer.

I didn't tell them which airline I was flying, so this sounds like general security
