schengen visa

Hi we are a retired couple who have booked our flights to Europe with the intention of buying a camper van and travelling mostly in France and Spain We have just heard of the Schengen visa requirements for Australians and have tried to ring the French consulate in Sydney (no answer) We have heard of the type D visa which allows more than 3 months in the schengen countries for older people but cannot find it anywhere on the French site. Have you any ideas how to get around all this. Also we know no one in France who we could name as a person inviting us(part of the long stay visa application) e found on the web. Can anyone help please. We leave in 8 weeks and as we have done England heaps of times really don.t want to spend a long time there

Got to keep calling the French consulate. No one here know what the French visa requirements are for an Australian. And if they claim they do, I would not trust them. This is not area where you want incomplete or inaccurate info.

According to the French Embassy in Australia site, you'll have to apply for your visa in person, and you have to apply online for an appointment. It looks like calling won't work: the website specifically says, " Telephone numbers and email addresses of the Visa Section are not available to the public." Not only that, but " Should you try to contact other Departments regarding visa matters, please be aware that they will not be able to answer your questions or transfer your call to the Visa section.
