Schengen question: re-entry after visa stay

If a person enters the Schengen area for 4 months on a Student visa (for Norway: $381, cheap!) then leaves for the UK, what happens when they return to the Schengen area after being in the UK? Do they start a new entry for 90 days starting at 0 and is the previous visa period stay ignored?

A student visa and a tourist visa are two different issues. Assuming the student visa has expired, then she would simply be using a tourist visa that is good for 90 days out of any 180 day period.

Here is the code:

Article 5

Entry conditions for third-country nationals

▼M5
1. For intended stays on the territory of the Member States of a duration of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, which entails considering the 180-day period preceding each day of stay, the entry conditions for third-country nationals shall be the following:

...

1a. For the purposes of implementing paragraph 1, the date of entry shall be considered as the first day of stay on the territory of the Member States and the date of exit shall be considered as the last day of stay on the territory of the Member States. Periods of stay authorised under a residence permit or a long-stay visa shall not be taken into account in the calculation of the duration of stay on the territory of the Member States.

Christi, I've read that an individual with a Schengen student visa may travel outside of the Schengen but has to alert the authorities than they'll be doing so. I'm not sure some of my sources are legitimate, though. Would you know?

E.G. here's one mention I could quickly lay hands on:

https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/student-schengen-visa/

"The Schengen visa validity is predetermined by the authorities the day you are issued the visa. As aforementioned, as a student visa it commonly encompasses duration of up to 90 days, with multiple-entries, however that is no rule. During that time, students are allowed to travel in and out of the designated country, within the Schengen area. However, you have to notify the authorities if you intend to make trips in and out of the Schengen space."

No big deal making that notification, probably, but a good thing to know if true?

Thanks, that's what I figured but thought I'd check.

The $381 visa fee was a surprise, and then the airfare to be fingerprinted at an approved vendor, $600 in unforeseen costs.
