Macron just made this announcement in his speech.

For 30 days.

I dont think Macron runs the Schengen Area. Like everything else the truth can be elusive. What I found was:

The French President Emmanuel Macron has urged the EU and Schengen
Area Member Countries to tighten border controls in order to curb the
further spreading of the novel coronavirus, which has recently been
announced as a pandemic by the World Health Organization.

Then I found this which calls it a proposal

The European Union is set to shut down all Schengen Area Borders, as
an extreme measure to prevent the Coronavirus from further spreading
in the borderless area.

The European countries have discussed today the idea of introducing a
ban on entry to the 26-state Schengen passport-free travel zone, which
would cover all non-essential visits from third countries, with
exemptions including for citizens of the Schengen area, people

Another report of the same speech says the French borders will close

The French borders close from Tuesday at lunch in cooperation with EU
countries. French President Emmanuel Macron said this in a televised
speech to the nation on Monday. "We're in a health war," he said.
familiar with the work.

The proposal was announced by the President of the EU Commission
Ursula von der Leyen.

The World Health Organization says this:

Recommendations for international trafic WHO continues to advise
against the application of travel or trade restrictions to countries
experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks.

In general, evidence shows that restricting the movement of people and
goods during public health emergencies is ineffective in most
situations and may divert resources from other interventions.
Furthermore, restrictions may interrupt needed aid and technical
support, may disrupt businesses, and may have negative social and
economic effects on the affected countries. However, in certain
circumstances, measures that restrict the movement of people may prove
temporarily useful, such as in settings with few international
connections and limited response capacities.

The EU website that lists all the border controls makes no mention of it yet....

Its their country and I respect what ever they come up with; so no opinion here.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Macron said it was agreed today with his European homologues. Tomorrow will be another visioconférence of European Council.

Interior Minister Castaner provided further details in his remarks later tonight.

It seems much more to be about not allowing foreigners to enter than it is about not allowing foreigners to leave.

They said that except for European citizens, UK citizens (he made a point of mentioning they have been invited/included), those who hold residence cards, and some exceptions like medical personnel, no one else will be allowed to enter European space.

We shall see.

Oh Joe, you are absolutely right! Don’t know how I messed up Saturday’s and Tuesday’s dates. Good grief.

I fixed the subject line.

Anyway it has just been announced as I projected. Except the message I saw from the French civil aviation authority says they will stop allowing non-European citizens and residents to enter France tonight as of midnight- they didn’t start at noon.

Here is the news flash from the NYT: (still early, with an error in the text):

The E.U. barred most travelers from outside the bloc for 30 days.

European leaders voted Tuesday to close off at least 26 countries to nearly all visitors from the rest of the world for at least 30 days in a bid to arrest the spread of the coronavirus, starting a long stretch of isolation like nothing in modern European history outside wartime.

Britain said it would was not planning to participate in the measure, said the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
