Scenic camping grounds in Germany/France/Italy/Switzerland?

Any suggestions on great camping grounds?

We're driving through Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland in a motorhome in September/October. We're looking for pretty places to camp, central to smaller cute towns and away from the larger cities. We're a young couple but dont want to stay around noisy party places, if you know what i mean :)

Are camping grounds crowded at this time of year? Is it preferable to book ahead or can we arrive and not be booked out? Any places to avoid?

We have many internet sites for camping grounds but so much information is overwhelming! Are there any places that you would recommend? All suggestions very much appreciated :)

In GERMANY :I do not know if it has the kind of scenery that you want, but it is at a good location : near Braubach at the Rhine River. The pleasant little town Braubach is the location of the medieval castle Marksburg. (It is the only medieval castle at the Rhine River which was not destroyed).
I read that that camping ground is totally filled with German people during the summer months. A camp site there can be reserved in advance, on the internet. I do not know what maximum number of motor homes can be accomodated there.
At Braubach public transportation is available : Bus, Railroad passenger trains, Boats. Braubach has a flower garden : I think it is near the boat docks. In Braubach I was in a pleasant pastry cafe : it specializes in a small baked item that has cherries in it. (I do not know if that pastry cafe is still there).

Claire, one of my all time favorite spots that we have visited was Eguisheim, France. Within the town limits there was a campground. It is on the western side of France close to Colmar, Germany.

Our most favorite spot in Europe was Hallstaat, Austria which had a campground down the road. While there you should visit Hilter's Eagle's Nest which is within a thirty-five minute drive. Besides its historical significance, the view is spectacular. After we came home from seeing it, I found out that my father's military group had held it during WWII. Therefore, we went back on our second trip to Germany.

Rick Steves has both of these in his travel guides. Check them out. You are going to love the motorhome. We have rented one three times and covered a lot of area. We think it is the only way to go in comfort. I will be glad to give you more suggestions as to places to see and then you can do a Goggle search as to if the area has campgrounds.

Keep traveling!

in our walks along the Main in Wurzburg, we have noticed a lovely campground right on the river, on the fortress side.

You will find many campgrounds in any area you choose. I always drive to the town I select and ask about campgrounds. Travelers on this page may suggest campgrounds too far for you to consider. Even selecting one from a guidebook does not always mean it will be convenient to get to.

I always search for one where I am when I decide to spend the night. You can do that with ease in the four countries you list. And you will find it a more convenient way to travel.
