Scandinavian Capitals and Bergen

Hey Fellow Travelers!

A bit of a dilemma for the first time in a long time. Going to Stockholm, Oslo, Bergen, and Copenhagen in September, and it seems I have an extra day to spend somewhere, and I'm looking for recommendations. My wife and I are spending 4 nights in Stockholm and then 4 nights in Oslo, 2 in Bergen and 4 in Copenhagen. Should we stay that extra day in Oslo, Bergen or Copenhagen? I should mention that I've been to all of these places (allbeit over 40 years ago!). Maybe stay an extra day in Bergen and check out some waterfalls? Let me know your thoughts. Appreciate it.

I would go with an extra night in Bergen. There are always opportunities for day trips around there. Have you thought about doing the. Norway in a Nutshell route from Oslo to Bergen (or vice versa)?

How are you getting from Oslo to Bergen?

If you follow the Norway in a Nutshell route you'll get beautiful scenery, waterfalls and the spectacular Naerøyfjord. You can DIY or book directly with FjordTours.

It can be done in one long day or you could overnight enroute. If lodging is available in Flåm (or Aurland) you would have time to go to Stegastein Viewpoint, kayaking, hiking, maybe the Borgund Stave Church....

Spending that extra night in Bergen is a good plan. You’re dedicating 4 each of in the other cities, so having more than just 2 in Bergen will help balance your itinerary, and there will be plenty in:near Vergen to keep you occupied.

With just one extra night I would add it to Bergen.

That said, if you are doing the NIN, I would tweak it a bit and take a night from Oslo and stop in Stavanger for 2 nights.

jandlasich, you might want to read this trip report that was just posted yesterday or today. The poster there spent several days in Bergen and took a day trip with one tour company to the Naeroyfjord. It is from a couple of years ago, but it still should be pretty viable, and it sounds like something that you might be interested in.

I would definitely read through it and check it out. Here is a link to it: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/tr-bergen-norway-in-2-1-2-days-september-2024

The amazing fjords of Norway are not included in your plan. Bergen is nice, but Alesund, Geirangerfjord, Flam and more farther north are special.
Perhaps you could take a day off Stockholm, another off Oslo as well as one off Bergen (we did it in one full day).

Our cruise went to the North Cape and six ports of Norway and was special.

One more thing, when in Stockholm, be sure to visit the Vasa Museum, its great.
Also, visit the Viking Museum, on a day trip from Copenhagen.
