Save the Carry-On Petition

It seems there are some lawmakers in Washington who like the idea of banning all carry-ons like Canada is doing for flights into the U.S.

To counter this, One Bag One World has started a petition to "Save the Carry-On." Please go over and sign the petition unless the thought of taking on practically nothing for a 12 hour flight pleases you.

Frank, thanks for the posting. I signed the petition.

Actually, as long as all they do is not allow carryon bags TO the US, I guess I am not too upset. My potentially lost bag quotient for European flights pre-2000 was 67% and having carryon averted a possible disaster in 2001, so not being able to carry on TO Europe would have been upsetting. But on the way back, although I have spent considerable time accumulating a carryon wardrobe, I could live with a lost bags on the way home. But on the way over, no way.

I'm just worried that the stupidity might grow to disallowing carryons in either direction.

Frank II,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I hadn't heard anything about the "lawmakers" planning to ban all carry-ons. What a dumb idea!

As you noted, it won't be too pleasant sitting on a 12-hour flight with no water, no snacks or personal hygiene items and no in-flight entertainment (with some airlines at least).

Lee, the initial talk in Washington is not to allow carry-ons at all...even domestically. That's why this petition was started.

As long as the government keeps putting incompetents in important jobs in TSA and Homeland Security, as well as most government agencies, we'll continue to see ridiculous rules and security theater.

Even if the ban is only TO the US, it will impact our international one-bag light traveling friends. And keep in mind that, once a one-bag policy gets started, it will be hard to justify allowing carry-ons leaving the US. For openers, the TSA's work would be much lighter without large carry-ons to screen, and for another, the airlines are making a lot of money on checked bag fees, but more is always welcome.

So...the future of light traveling could be at risk, and light travel is of value long after the flight is over--negotiating trains, buses, public transit, etc. is so much easier without heavy luggage. I realize that we could simply check our light-weight (former) carryons, but I doubt that they or their contents would survive well in a contest with big, heavy baggage.

Thanks for posting this Frank. I signed it as did my wife, daughter, son and daughter in law. All this hysterical knee jerk reaction on the part of TSA has to be stopped. I swear I am sick and tired of air travel since 9/11. If people would just do their jobs in the first place none of this would be necessary. Since we're kind of on the subject, I would personally rather see scanning machines in place rather that pat downs which are ineffective anyway.

signed, but to be honest, whoever did the site, needs to do one in real life and not the internet.....

that or sue the living crap out of the US, or go to the courts for an injunction...

I am curious as to what the legal theory for a lawsuit or injunction would be.

Thanks Frank for the link - I'm in! What'll they think of next (sorry, I shouldn't ask).

Don't ask, because I'm afraid it is inevitable, if air security adopts the full body scanners as they seem to be about to, that there will be an incident at some point involving something being smuggled in a body cavity. (Unfortunately, the body imaging technology does not allow visibility of internal organs or cavities.)

So, when that happens, brace yourself for body cavity searches. Unless we finally figure out that screening every passenger, however invasively, is not the best strategy to achieve meaningful air security.

Reference the comments made by "JER" in Seattle:

That's why the Israelis are so good at their screening procedures. They look for TERRORISTS. We look for WEAPONS. Until we get our thinking straight, we will continue to have "incidents"....one of which - sooner or later - is going to be successful.

We don't really even look for weapons. TSA puts on a show hoping the American people will think they're being protected.

Because of the limitations of the pat down, the device the Christmas Day terrorist had on him wouldn't have been found.

One of the problems after 9/11 was that the intelligence agencies and federal law enforcement agencies didn't speak to each other. So Bush appointed an Intelligence Czar to fix the problem. Eight years later and they're still not sharing info.

The next problem is we don't put in the proper people to do the job. Tell me what qualifies Janet Napolitano to be the head of Homeland Security. Oh yeah, she helped Obama get elected.

And lastly, the American people. Most have no clue and really think all these new measures are protecting them. And as long as the American people are like sheep and believe everything they are told by the government, the more they'll be taken advantage of.

What worries me is that Congress may want to be part of the theater to show that they are helping to protect the people by enacting inane laws that do no more than inconvenience experienced travelers, and make more money for airlines and shipping companies.

So we cannot have a carry on if we are flying to Canada? Darn it, I'm going to Toronto in March and was planning on doing this :( Is it a temporary rule?

You can carry on TO Canada, but as of now you can't carry on FROM Canada.

Although this might change with the new TSA rules. It's not putting as much requirements on Canada to check everyone.

I'm the author of the petition from www.1bag1world.com. My reasoning is that 1) if Canada can do it, so might other countries, and 2) the fact that the underwear bomber checked no luggage is constantly mentioned in media accounts as a "red flag", and 3) there are reportedly members of Congress (possibly under the influence of the fee-happy airlines, flight attendant unions, or shipping companies) who would look favorably on carry-on bans or draconian luggage restrictions. Thanks for your interest.

Signed. I doubt business travelers will allow this to stand.
