For the drive between these two cities, what stops are worthy of a little look around? On the way to Santiago, we will have already stopped in Tui and Valenca and spent two nights in Pontevedra. We have limited time, so an overnight anywhere in between won’t be possible. Thanks a bunch!
We did a day trip from Porto to Santiago de Compostela and it was great. We stopped at a village on the Portuguese side of the Spanish-Portugal border that had an old fort. It overlooked the river.
I wonder whether that was Tui. But I confess that I don't remember a fort, just an old church (with an English audio-guide, by the way).
Tui has the cathedral and Valenca has the huge fort.
You might want to stop at Vila do Conde in Portugal.
Thanks yes, but it is Valenca on the Portuguese side of the border with the fort. It’s like the citadel in Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada if anyone’s been there. We will be stopping for a walk and gawk on the way to Pontevedra.
It would make for a longer drive, but Ourense was nice to visit.
Thanks for your replies. Vila do Conde looks right up our alley and isn’t out of the way. Sounds perfect for a lunch stop!
