I'm thinking of buying a Galaxy Tab and taking it to Austria and Italy in September. It is smaller and easer to handle than the iPad. Do any of you have experience with this device in Europe? Is there a GPS app for it? Is 3G needed or just use the numerous wifi hotspots? Any pros or cons using the Galaxy tab overseas? Will buy a "cheap" cell phone there for calling.
Thanks
You're going to have to have a really good data package to afford 3G while overseas. Wifi would work for most of what you want it to do. A GPS app would be pretty useless, though, since it would only work where you have wifi.
Gary, I don't know enough about the Galaxy Tab to be able to offer many specific comments on it. However, one thing to determine is whether you'll be able to disable or switch off the 3G portion and just use Wi-Fi, so that you don't incur any "unpleasant" charges. I'm not sure how useful a GPS App. would be without potentially expensive 3G access? Be sure to post another note if you decide to buy it, as I'm sure the information would be useful for others here. Good luck!
I have a Galaxy Tab. I haven't used it in Europe yet, but hope to. I use Google Maps/Google Navigation for GPS. Google Maps works fine with wifi. Google Navigation doesn't. You can use it wifi only. I don't usually have my 3G on, actually. You turn the flight mode on, and then enable wifi. It is very easy to do-there is a wifi toggle on the notification bar to turn wifi on and off. I love my Tab. Great size, it fits in my purse. It's the same size as a Kindle, although a little thicker. I use a Kindle sleeve for mine. It's better for web browsing than my Droid, but more portable than the iPad.
