Salzburg Question

First time to Salzburg, europe for that matter too. Would you stay in the heart of Salzburg or something outside the city a bit? We have a car. Do these small towns outside the city close up at 6pm? A little night life (9pm) would be nice... Anyone know of a hotel that has bikes for guests?

Jay; We have visited Salzburg 3 different times and have always stayed at the Hotel Sallerhof. It is located in the small town of Grödig just 7 km out side of Salzburg. We've always had a car but the bus line runs from Grödig into Altstadt so the bus is easier than finding parking. Grödig is a small town so there is no night life but there is a chocolate factory. There are no tours of the factory but they do have a factory store with great prices!! Grödig is on the road to Berchtesgaden. Close to the Eagle's nest and saltmine. The family is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is wonderful!! I think I remember that they had bikes for guests to use. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay there.
Here is the link to the hotel web site. http://www.sallerhof.com/en-index.htm Map of location: http://www.sallerhof.com/en-location-arrival.htm Happy travels.

I stayed in the Hotel Golden Krone which was just over the river. I like the location a lot. Easy walking to the main tourist areas, but they had parking for my car. It was a hotel that Rick recommended. Don't know if he still does, but they were helpful, the room was of a nice size, looking out on a back garden and everything was walkable. Pam

There is a Best Western and also a Holiday Inn with parking at both. Not too European, but both hotels were nice and were within easy walking distance of the old town area. I stayed at both and would go with whatever is cheaper.

There are some nice B&Bs in the vicinity of the airport in Salzburg but I cannot recall their names. In the New Town section, I could recommend the Hotel Wolf Dietrich. It is a pleasant hotel in a historic part of town, and a large parking garage is only a block away. At the Wolf Dietrich, ask for a room in the main building; the four-story annex does not have an elevator.

BTW the parking at the Golden Krone was in the hillside. I can't remember if they gave me a voucher or if I had to pay. I think that there was a voucher. I can't see any info on the website so I must have asked. Pam

Jay,
We were in Salzburg three years ago. We stayed in a small hotel called hotel hof (www.hofwirt.com). It's very modern looking but rooms are small but very clean. The staff was always friendly/helpful, it had a nice lobby, bar and breakfast was good. Many Americans were staying there from Germany. There were restaurants, shopping also around hotel. Parking wasn't easy but there is a main parking area separate that you can leave your car in a secure area. The location was great as we were right across the river but walking distance to the castle, main shopping area. Also if you're coming through Germany, we loved Garmisch. There is an American army base there w/ a resort. It's a wonderful Bavarian town. We stayed at a small hotel: hotel Aschenbrenner which was in walking distance to the town, charm of Bavaria and modern enough to have Internet. Also there a tram trip you can take up to the snow top mountains. We enjoyed this more than staying in Berchtesgaden on our way to Eagles Nest.

Salzburg has a great walkable center. I would definitely stay in the center. I like Institute San Sebastian. It's a college dorm but very quiet (there is a hostel with more of a party atmosphere near the train station). They let me park for free in their tiny lot last time I stayed there. I don't think of Salzburg as a great nightlife place. The brewery is fun but hasn't run very far into the evening when I've visited. I'm sure there are choices but they may be in the newer part of the city rather than the old center.

I love to stay just outside of the city, by the airport and with only a 15 minute bus ride into town. Check Pension Ballwein and Bloberger Hof which are both off of Moosestrasse. Free parking, lovely rooms and nice owners. Bloberger Hof also has a restaurant for their patrons.
