Salzburg or Dolomites? HELP!! :)

Sorry for the "help!" but having to make some quick decisions.

Our april arrival in Munich is at 1:50 pm and everywhere from there by train. Initially planned to head right to Bolzano, arriving at 7:30 pm then to Castelrotto the following day and night. Long story short, we'd arrive in Bolzano at night (sunset) to few/expensive hotel choices. Basically a wasted day. Then have to bus over to Castelrotto the following morning.

On the other hand, we could ditch the Dolomites, head straight from our Munich flight to Salzburg arriving there around 5pm... tour Salzburg that night AND all the following day and night before heading to Venice the next morning.

Looks like Salzburg would provide some degree of mountain scenery and be MUCH easier logisticlly. Is ditching the Dolomites in favor of this a good move as again, all our travel is via train?

Thank you,

Jack

Hi Jack,

Not to cause confusion, but the another place I'd recommend that may be convenient for you by train and has terrific mountain scenery would be Mittenwald, Germany (2 hours or so from Munich and about 45 min. from Innsbruck).
Otherwise, as an answer to your post, I'd say Salzburg also.

Hands down Salzburg. It would be a great place for a day. The castle is fun, and I really enjoyed the old world feeling of the down town. You will be in the mountains. Bolzano is nice, but other than seeing the ice man there isn't much to do.

Yes, Bolzano a bit limited and I recommend a car for the Dolomites. I'd go with Salzburg.

Salzburg is one of my favorite places in Europe! I'm glad you now want to go there!

sounds like you've made your choice, you can't go wrong with Salzburg. Depending on the number of sites you want to visit, look into the Salzburger Card at the tourist info near the Residenz. You pay one price for the card (valid for 24/48/72 hours)and that allows admission to almost all the "must see" sights.
