Safety of driving from Krakow to Zamosc and back

I want to drive a rental car from Krakow to Zamosc, Poland and back through southern Poland. I keep reading and hearing about concerns about car theft and vandalism -- to the extent the rental car companies won't let you rent a car in other countries (Hungary and the Czech Republic) and drive it into Poland and they won't let you buy complete first dollar insurance coverage. Any thoughts?

Hi Steve,

I've driven extensively in Poland without problems. I believe that there was a spate of theft and vandalism earlier on this decade; even my home car insurance would not give full cover for driving in Eastern Europe.

Now, things seem to be a lot better. I would warn you that the roads in Poland are in bad condition, very busy and very slow. For a trip from Krakow to Zamosc, I would allow a 7 hours or so. Be careful when overtaking and be aware of oncoming drivers executing overtaking manoeuvres with insufficient space. Many roads have a shoulder, which lorries and buses will pull into to let you past. If they do this, still make sure that you can see the road ahead - it does not necessarily mean that the road ahead is clear.

Apart from the above, I've always enjoyed driving in Poland.

Have a great time!
