We are planning a cruise around Greece in May, but I'm concerned how safe it is with the current unrest over the economy. I would appreciate any recent traveler's comments.
The sporadic civil unrest is happening in only certain parts of Athens, you will likely fly into Athens, spend one night , go to ship and off you go. The islands will be absolutely fine, and lovely, have a great trip.
Lisa, As the previous reply mentioned, most of the demonstrations have been taking place in the vicinity of Syntagma Square in Athens. These have been somewhat sporadic and there's really no way to know what the situation will be like in May. I'd be more concerned about disruptions in transportation, which could affect your ability to get to the places you're planning to visit. I visited various parts of Greece in 2010, and had no problems at all. There were demonstrations happening at that time also, but I only observed one somewhat "anemic" protest march in Nafplion. In the same situation, I'd probably "go for it" and hope for the best. Happy travels!
Hi Lisa, Your cruise director will advise if there is any difficulty or cancellation of service in a port. Or, the ship may choose not to dock.
You might consider booking the ship's excursion instead of going independently for that day, but why not wait to worry. We were very safe in Greece in October. Also, strikes or demonstrations are frequently annouced in advance. Which ports are you visiting?
Will also mention that we were in Athens on a transportation day strike; the hotel advised us the day before and booked a taxi to take us to Piraeus (the port). They were used to coping with any disruption in service. We might have taken the metro to the port but it was only 28 euros all the wayfrom Monasteraki to our dock.
After we left Athens, there was a strike affecting the Parthenon- not getting inside that would have been sad, but it was open the next day.
