Safe to fly with broken nose?

I know this is an odd question but I broke my nose in Spain this weekend and at the hospital they filled my nose (and I believe some of my sinuses) with some kind of packing to prevent bleeding. Unfortunately, this means it is impossible to breathe through my nose and I am also unable to clear my ears. The doctor said I should have the packing removed when I return to the US. I am currently scheduled to get on a plane in about 6 hours and I am worried about what damage I might do if flying in this condition. Does anyone know if this is safe, or if there is anything I can do to make it safer? The doctor gave me strict instructions not to remove the packing myself.

Thanks!

I'm assuming that the doctor knew you were flying soon and I think if it was going to be a problem he would have told you. Not being able to clear your ears might be uncomfortable, but it shouldn't do any damage.

It was always my understanding that you shouldn't lift anything with a broken nose. The reason being, when people lift they "clench" their noses involuntarily. Be careful with your luggage!

Wow Stu. I really feel for you. I have had an op on my sinuses twice and have had my nose and sinuses packed and its horrid. I think you are going to find it really uncomfortable flying especially as you can't clear your ears. You will get a build up of pressure and descending will be the worst. Under no circumstances remove the packing - this should be left to a doctor. I can't give you any advice to make things better or safer all I can do is wish to luck and hope you get home unscathed.

Stu, can you let us all know how you went getting home? I'd really be interested in knowing. Hope all went well.
