Last time I was in Paris, the Metro stopped running around midnight...

like Bill said - I'm pretty sure the metro stops around midnight as well. Best to get a taxi.

We were in the moulin rouge area on a tour of Paris three years ago. We watched as a riot began with a group of young adults/teens when a concert in the area was cancelled. They were throwing bottles, yelling, chanting, throwing stuff, etc., we ran into a restaurant and stayed put until our tour bus came back and we could get back on it. We watched as the kids dispursed and the police came. Then after the police left the kids started coming back. I was scared stiff...however, there were locals strolling about with their children and they seemed totally calm, happy, etc. Seems like I really over-reacted compared to the people who live there. Just letting you know so you can just be aware and take precautions so you are safe.

Last time I was at the Moulin Rouge late at night was nearly 30 years ago. I was, I suppose, young and stupid. I walked (yes, walked) from neighborhoods near the Seine to the Moulin Rouge and back a few times, all into the night. A long walk, but what else did I have to do? It was certainly "educational", but I never felt unsafe. But then, as I say, I was young and stupid, and it wasn't 2008.

Cheryl,
Use your gut feeling. If you do not feel comfortable walking at midnight, splurge for a taxi. Your safety is far more important than second guessing yourself.

I would reserve the ticket if you are going in late May.

IMO Paris is very safe, especially in summer time when Parisians spend a lot of time outside after midnight.
I think the subway stops after 1 AM, but I would ask some locals. That late at night, the sunway might be pretty empty.
If you don't feel safe, just take a taxi.
