RS's Packing Cubes for the Convertible Carry-on?

There's been a lot of discussion on packing cubes. I'm trying to understand the concept. Would you recommend the RS's Packing Cubes for the RS's Convertible Carry-on? It looks as if they are quite large. I need someone's expert opinion. Thank you.

Packing cubes work well in the convertible carry-on. They keep stuff organized and in place. It's especially important if you plan to use the bag as a backpack--otherwise all the heavy stuff slumps to the bottom of the bag and makes the bag uncomfortable to wear. The advantage of the RS cubes is that they fit the bag perfectly.

I don't think they are actually as big as they look. I was concerned when I bought mine, but they fit perfectly into the RS Appenzell Day Pack which is basically just a backpack. I'm positive that bag is smaller than the convertible carry-on, so if they fit for me, you will have no problems.

Also, the cubes are soft-sided mesh which means they've got some give and you can squish the sides in.

You can probably get at least 5 of them fully packed in the convertible carry-on---probably more. A package of RS cubes include 2 small and one medium (at least that is what I got). I have a couple of Eagle Creek and I get all of them in the carry-on. They are well worth the money. Everything stays neat and organized and you are constantly repacking.

I recently returned from a car trip with a larger case and packed half my stuff in cubes and the other loose. From now on, everything goes in cubes. Much neater and easier to manage.

I think you'll find that most cubes--RS, Eagle Creek, Ebags, etc--are about the same size and will fit in most of the standard sized carry-on bags. And since they are soft sided, they can be made to conform.

Some people prefer to use larger ziploc bags. They work too. I think the principle is the same for all--it keeps your stuff orderly and easy to get to.

They worked great for me on a trip to Japan in 2006. I bought one set of three, and when packed full they fit the covertable carry-on backpack perfectly with room on top to spare. I wouldn't travel without them.

My reply may be too late to be of help for Ernest, but for other people who are considering buying a packing cube : If a traveller's primary bag is a cary-on size bag (21 inch x 14 inch x 9 inch) I think the traveller feels behooved to make the most efficient use of space in that bag. I would use only one packing cube : Large, 3 1/2 inches thick (Columbia brand), I would cram all of my underwear in that one packing cube. (Rick Steves' large packing cube is 5 inches thick). And I would roll a few shirts (wrinkle resistant shirts) in one Pack-Mate: Medium size. I do not use the small packing cubes, but different people have a different style of packing and travelling. I use the Rick Steves' compact travellin' toiletries bag. Thus, there is space in the bag for pants, and a silk sheet sack, and a travel towell, some food, a book, etc.
