RS Euro Flight Bag

We're thinking of purchasing the Rick Steves Euro Flight bag, but have a couple of questions before buying.
Does the bag hold its upright shape when empty, or does it flop into a heap?
The opening of the front of the bag seems really low. When completely filled, have you had any issues with things at the top falling out?

The bag holds shape when empty. To date, I have not had problems with anything falling out when opened. I have a number of "personal carry on" bags and which I use depend on the length of the trip and camera gear I am taking. I have used the Euro Flight Bag for maybe 8-10 trips and it has performed fairly well (well, there was one mishap but RS replaced the bag in question and no repeats!)

Ray, you sound like our kind of travelers. Sometimes I/we feel like "bag people," that is, each trip may require a different bag so you need more than one kind of tote.
And since you mentioned camera equipment, that would be the need of my husband who travels with a regular camera and one additional lens.
Was the issue you had with the bag a seam failure? That would be unfortunate on a trip.

Yes, things at the top can fall out when you open the bag -- I tend to put rolled-up items along the front edge to provide a "wall" , or use my slippers sole-out. Don't put small heavy things on the top.

I just received mine this week, liked that it weighs a bit less than the more structured Victorinox one I've been using yet has the same amount of storage but in a more upright manner, also the loop to go over the handle of my rolling suitcase. I also worried a bit about the low opening. I'll put a couple of books on the bottom for sturdiness, and otherwise the items I put in it are already in something else, not too worried about them falling out--small knitting bag with book & snacks for flight, adapters, toiletries, spare top, socks and undies in a zip lock bag. I don't usually open the carry-on except to get out my knitting bag for the flight.

Yes, unfortunately it was a seam failure. The strap just broke. Fortunately the bag is well padded and there was no damage to the contents. The only time a RS strap broke and I have a number of their pieces of luggage. I put my camera bag inside the "personal item." That way, when I travel I only take the camera bag with me, not lots of other stuff. I have several camera bags so it depends on the camera and size of the lens(es) I am taking. Generally, it has been a good bag for me. Regarding what an earlier poster said, I've never put heavy things on top of my lighter stuff, so nothing has really fallen out for me.

Carol,
I have had the Euro Flight Bag for about 2+ years. Been to Italy and beyond a few times. My latest use has been using it as my daily walk to the shower bag at an rv resort. Have used it for about 150 days straight. No failures of any kind.

I usually put a book or something similar, if necessary, in the front to keep small items from falling out. Doesn't happen that often.

But...mine does seem to collapse on itself. No big deal though. It holds quite a bit of anything that you want to put into it...and there-in lies the problem. You can over load this bag very quickly. Remember that you are going to carry this bag either by the handle or by putting it on your shoulder or cross body with most of the weight sort of on your neck. If you put more that 5 pounds, or so, into the bag it feels like a millstone around your neck. Especially if you have to cover distance. Camera gear might be a determining factor.

But it has a bunch of little pockets inside and outside and fits over the handle of my RS rolling bags.

Having said that I'm not trading mine in. Has plenty of uses as do all bags.
Enjoy your trip,
Gene

I just received mine last week and am excited to try it out on my next trip. I thought it was a good idea to have something designed that would fit under the seat since I hate having anything in overhead storage unless it's directly over my head and I'm in an aisle seat. I got this to have that instant grab n go option.

My bag definitely flops over when empty but I was planning on storing it flat when not in use.
