Simon I have only been on one RS tour, a 14 dayone. We had only one solo male in our tour, but our tour was a Family Tour( so lots of kids and teens) , this young mans parents had bought the tour for him and this was the only date that worked for him. So he was solo, about 25 years old. I think he had a great time, we all included him as much as he wanted to be included. The group eats about 1/2 dinners together and all breakfasts, so he wasn't alone much, but did his own thing on some nights, he was always welcome to join us and others. RS groups are generally laid back friendly people, no uptight prissy types are allowed.

Have been on two RS 7 day tours. Florence and Istanbul. Florence was solo. Istanbul traveled with friend I met via this forum. Both trips excellent experiences. The tours make everyone feel welcomed as well as allowing personal time and space when needed. Definitely recommend the tours to your friend.

simon, I've travelled solo on six RS tours so far, and have never felt "alone within the group". I always travel on my own both before and after tours, so I'm quite comfortable travelling solo. I would highly recommend any of the RS tours whether for solo travel or otherwise. Your friend might find it very helpful to order the new tour catalogue and Tour DVD, as that will provide a good idea on what the tours are like. The Tour DVD can also be viewed online on this website (about 45 minutes). Cheers!

I've been on 5 RS tours-4 of them solo. Most of the time, I never felt 'alone.' However, on one tour that was all married couples except me I didn't feel as included. Usually though, there were 3-5 other solo travelers and it wasn't a problem. 7 Days in Rome is an incredible tour. It is very active and hectic (because the city is hectic) and being in the same hotel every night and being able to 'settle in' helps offset that. I went Xmas week and it was an incredible time to be there.

I've been on two RS trips, both solo; and I would highly recommend RS trips for a solo traveler... Maybe I was lucky, but on both my trips we had a great group of people! On my first trip there were two other solo travelers, and on my second trip I was the only solo; also both the trips I've been on had only about half "couples", and the other travel "partners" were mother-daughter, or sisters, or neighbors. On both my trips everyone got along very well, and we were all good about including others in small group activities. It was very easy to tag along with other tour members for side trips, but there was also the freedom to do your own thing.. We even had instances where people who were traveling together would do their own thing, and one went with one mini-group and one with another. (to be continued)...

(continued)... I also think the RS guides do a good job of watching out for everyone, and the guide is usually another "solo", and while you obviously don't want to infringe on their space the guide often teams up with one of the solos.. On my trips I had several breakfasts where I sat with our guide because we were the only "solos" at breakfast that morning.
I consider myself shy and not very good around strangers, but on my trips our groups warmed up to everyone very quickly... Obviously, if your friend is more of an extreme case of on the shyness scale, and refuses to leave their room, it might be a problem.. RS trips the guides do have a couple little ice-breaker games they like to play, that can be a little stressful for a shy person, but the games aren't that bad and actually do work; and actually on my trips some of the solos actually did better with those games than some of the couples who were used to relying on their partner for everything. I'm sure some other tour companies also have good guides, and good groups of people, but I highly recommend the RS tours for solo travelers.

Can recommend the 7 days in Rome. I arrived a couple of days early and did some sight seeing on my own. This was my third RS tour and I think one of my favourites. I appreciated the fact that in the mornings we had organized visits and then in the afternoon we were free to do whatever we wanted. We were given a good orientation to Rome's transit systems and had no problems finding our way from the hotel to downtown Rome and back. There is always a group dinner on the first evening and I find that good food and wine really breaks down any barriers! Our leader and guide also made sure that no one felt left out.

My husband and I did the 7 Days in Rome tour. It wss wonderful, I would recommend it to everyone. There were 3 or 4 solo people in our group and I don't think they ever felt left out. Everyone was very friendly.
