I was able to book a free round trip ticket to Amsterdam in July and I am still trying to decide on my trip itinerary. I have two weeks and my original plan was a three days in Amsterdam, six days in London, two or three days in Bruges, and two days in the Rhine Valley before flying out of Amsterdam. I have only been to Amsterdam (briefly) but I haven't been to any of the other places. But I am starting to rethink my trip as I love to hike and I am wondering if there are any other options that would include some good hikes. I have been to Switzerland, Austria, and also the French Pyrennes and those places were all amazing. I was just wondering if there were any other great hiking options that would fit in to my trip.
You can get a flight from Amsterdam to Edinburgh and from there catch a train to the Highlands of Scotland. Lots and lots of great hikes at a wide range of abilities. There some great walks (in the UK hikes are called walks) around Dunkeld. The TI has maps. Also Aviemore gives you access to the Cairngorms. You could head west to Fort William and Ben Nevis or further North to Torridon. The Ullapool area is beautiful. Here are some great links. Walk Highlands Hill Walk Scotland Or for Holidays. Glen Affric is wonderful. For a seaside walk, Culbin Sands. And there is more....
If part of your trip contains Germany, the entire country is criss-crossed by a seemingly infinite network of well-marked hiking and cycling trails. I don't know the specifics of any one hike in the Mittelrhein area, but I've seen plenty of marked trails. Depending on your location, you can usually buy a map at a local book or souvenir shop. Belgium also has many hiking options, although the trails usually aren't as well marked or as extensive.
The Netherlands has some amazing day-long hike routes. Highlights: the Veluwe area, the dunes between Zandvoort and Den Haag, and the Wadden Islands.
Well, this weekend's travel section in the New York Times is all about walking in Europe. You might want to check out the article On Trails Less Trodden (as entitled in the print version.) Or Europe in Nine Walks. Pam
Thanks for the great ideas! I will check them all out!! I'm up for anything new and different. Thank you!!
