Rough Itinerary: Take 2

A follow up to this thread:

First of all, thanks for the advice in that last one! We've taken it all under consideration and reworked our schedule. I used www.raileurope.com to get an idea of travel times and schedules, too.

Here's a revised itinerary:

London - 2 days (arriving early am on the 1st from US)
Paris - 4 days (including a day trip to Bayeux for WWII sites)
Munich - 2 days (night train Paris -> Munich)
Salzburg - 2 days
Venice - 2 days (night train Salzburg -> Venice)
Florance - 2 days
Rome - 5 days (flying home night of the 5th)

I was thinking of cutting out Salzburg, but the trip is actually 30 minutes less overall than from Munich to Venice (I'm guessing not as many mountain passes?). We know we won't have time to do a lot of "exploring" in some of these cities, and we're fine with that. In most we have very specific things we want to see, so a surface visit is totally fine for now.

Thoughts? I'm starting to look into lodging now. Thanks again!

Man, the itinerary listing in my posts always seems to get messed up with formatting. Sorry about that.

Darrell, are you going to Paris on the 2nd or 3rd day of your trip? If it's your 2nd day, then you're only spending 1 1/2 days in London. Depending on what you want to do in London, and taking jet lag into consideration, I think I might add a day in London and subtract one day from Rome. Other than that, I think your itinerary looks o.k. Yes, lots of travelling. However, after this trip, you can go back on your next trip to the cities/countries you really want to explore. Have fun!

You can always go back and edit your post, if it bothers you. I do that all the time when I see that I made a typo or spelled something wrong.

A day trip to Bayeux does not sound like much fun. That is a long train ride. Were you planning on doing a tour there? Battlebus will want you to stay overnight. You could do that and then go back to Paris that evening.

Regarding Bayeux:

One day -- can be done by car, but really hard -- train and car is verging on impossible, train only is probably impossible for mortals

Two days -- okay by train, better by car if you know a little history or study ahead

Three days -- You can clobber Normandy, picking up Ruen, Honfluer, St Malo, Les Andelys, Bayeux tapestry, and Mont St Michel

All of the above horribly short-change Paris on this itinerary.

I agree with Denise. I would take a day from Rome and add it to London. Even if you sleep well on airplanes, you will be very tired that first day in London.

I would also add at least 1(or 2) days to London. Instead of spliting your time bewteen Munich and Salzburg, I'd pick one (I'd go with Salzburg)- could do 3 days at either. Maybe cut Venice? or cut Rome by a day or 2.
