Rouen vs. Luxembourg

Heading to France. We have time to go to Rouen or Luxembourg, probably not both. Basically train from Paris to one of them, spend a day, train back to Paris.

So, which would you recommend for people who are interested in art, churches, and local beers?

Thanks!

Rouen is not famous for beers, but has two noteworthy churches (the cathedral, and St Maclou) and a well-regarded Museum (musée des Beaux-Arts). The train from Paris takes only 1h15min.

Luxembourg is further (2 hours) and more expensive to get to. It is a cute city, but I do not remember any particularly interesting religious architecture, and it can feel a bit sterile. Cannot speak about museums.

Definitely Rouen over Luxembourg for me!

For me Rouen is also the more charming place of the two, the gothic cathedral is way more beautiful and impressive there than the one in Luxembourg City. The latter is as far as I know not directly a hotspot for beers, there are breweries in the country like Diekirch but not so special and to my opinion not a reason for a trip.

You didn't ask for substitutes, but how about Chartres, Rheims, Orleans? Rouen is often part of a Normandy trip that's runs several days. Have you considered Lille, nicknamed Little Paris? Also has an excellent art museum.

Luxembourg is unique and they like beer so perhaps with a bit of digging you could find a local brew or 3.

In your situation I'd think you could hit all 3 requirements you list in Lille.

But, again, Luxembourg is unique.
