Rouch Itinerary

We have a very rough itinerary for our honeymoon. 19 days, starting June 21st this year:

  1. London - 2 days
  2. Bayeux - 2 days
  3. Paris - 3 days
  4. Chamonix - 2 days
  5. Munich - 2 days
  6. Venice - 2 days
  7. Florance - 2 days
  8. Rome (perhaps w/day trip to Pompeii?) - 4 days

We're just starting to look into travel, but we do know we'd like to take a ferry across the channel to Bayeux (call us nostalgic, but we think it'd be neat to take the "route" of the D-Day invasion), and we'd also like to take a day train from Chamonix to Munich to catch the sights.

Is this doable? We're planning on the stay in Chamonix to be a bit more relaxing, and sight filled days the rest of the stops.

This is a fast-paced, but feasible, 25-day itinerary.

You don't seem to have included time for travel in your 19-day estimate, however.

On the other hand, if you mean they are included in the times given, then many of your two-day stops are really only one day.

Many of your transits will take up most or all of a day, once you figure in the collateral time involved with packing, checking our, getting to the train, getting to your new digs and checking in and unpacking.

You can certainly do this, but don't underestimate those travel times.

I'd suggest consolidating or eliminating some destinations to give yourself a tad more time in the places you keep. Then compare that itinerary with this one and see which really is best for you. Sometimes you see more by seeing fewer places.

Congratulations and have a wonderful wedding and honeymoon.

Closest ferries to Bayeux are either:

Port of Cherbourg from either Bournemouth or Portsmouth

Ouistreham from Portsmouth

None really follow the invasion routes.

Looks like too much jumping around. Two days in a spot is really, at most, one and a half since you have to travel for half a day (or more), and three days in a spot ........

You will be worn out! Also- you aren't allowing travel time. You arrive one day and leave the next. Pick ONE or TWO - max Three stops. Maybe London, Paris, Rome. Or Paris, Muncih, Florance. But whatever you do, narrow it down. You need time to explore these wonderful locations - and time to explore each other!

You are trying to cram a lot into a short time. I am also planning a trip. We have 20 nights - in Italy - and I am wondering if 6 locations is too many. That is just in the Northern half of one country. You have one less day, 4 countries and 8 locations with a possible long day trip from one of your locations.

Are you planning this honeymoon for immediately after your wedding? If so, don't underestimate how much a wedding takes out of you.

I made a copy of a calendar page and wrote the places I want to go on small post-it sticky notes. I made one for each night in each of my destinations. I made some extras for places I thought I might want to spend another night, so I had some days with two places. I have played around with these, omitting some places and I THINK I have finally come up with my final itinerary. Pay attention to travel time.

Have you or your fiance been to Europe? If not, I think you are not allowing enough time in some places. Remember that 2 nights in a place means only one full day. Will you be taking the train? Flying? Driving?

What is in Munich that is worth taking you there for 2 nights/1 day? That seems out of the way for such a short time.

Since you have lots of ground to cover, skip the ferry and take the train from Paris to Bayeux.

Enjoy Bayeux, pretty interesting area.

I'm not sure there's much, or any, savings of time taking the train to Bayeux rather than the ferry.

More to the point it sounds like the boat ride is a meaningful choice for the bride and groom to be.

I for one have indulged my share of travel choices that were unorthodox, logistically hairy, even nutty, in pursuit of something that was important to me.

If the trip across the Channel is one of those, I say go for it. Just don't organize your entire trip on that basis. (If it's not that important, consider dropping London for this trip, as you would spend very little time there anyway.)

Wow,, thats alot of places . Remember, tours do trips at that pace,, but the hotels are prebooked, the routes well known to driver and all you have to do is show up after breakfast.

As others have noted,, you aren't really counting the travel time.. if you arrive in a city at dinner time,, that counts as one night,, leaving you one full day and the next night , before you have to leave again,, some of your places are worth more then one full day!

Congratulations and happy wedding and honeymoon planning!

I'm with the others who say you're not allowing enough time for travel from place to place, checking in and out, etc. You need to either add more days or cut some things out.

If taking the ferry across the channel is high on your priority list, consider making it the overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Caen (Ouistreham). You'll save the cost of a night in a hotel and have more daylight hours for sightseeing.

Yes, you can travel by train during the day from Chamonix to Munich. The German Rail site, www.bahn.de, has the best timetables for virtually all of Europe. Your fastest route with the fewest changes appears to be Chamonix-Martigny-Visp-Zurich-Munich, departing Chamonix at 08:16 and arriving in Munich at 17:28. To see for yourself, go to the site and click on the drop-down flag menu for English. After you get summary timetables for Chamonix-Munich, click on the arrow to the left of each departure time to see the connecting points.
